About the Role

As the Waste Strategy Implementation Programme Manager, you will play a critical role in future-proofing Nottingham City Council’s waste services. This means not only delivering today’s projects, but also ensuring the service is agile, resilient, and fully compliant with new and emerging waste legislation.

You’ll be responsible for maintaining a comprehensive understanding of current and upcoming waste regulations, legislation, and industry best practices. By proactively monitoring changes in the regulatory landscape, you will ensure that Nottingham’s waste management strategy remains ahead of the curve—mitigating risks and capitalising on opportunities for innovation and improvement.

Your work will involve:

  • Anticipating and responding to legislative changes: You’ll lead the service in adapting to new government policies, environmental targets, and statutory requirements, ensuring all projects and operational practices meet or exceed compliance standards.
  • Embedding compliance into service design: From project inception to delivery, you’ll ensure that legal and regulatory requirements are built into every aspect of the waste strategy, including procurement, supplier management, and operational procedures.
  • Championing continuous improvement: You’ll drive initiatives that not only meet current standards but also position the service to excel as new regulations emerge, supporting Nottingham’s ambition to be a leader in sustainable waste management.
  • Engaging stakeholders: You’ll work closely with internal teams, external partners, and government agencies to ensure all stakeholders are informed, engaged, and compliant with relevant regulations and procedures.
  • Supporting recycling and sustainability goals: By integrating best practices and forward-thinking approaches, you’ll help the Council deliver on its climate change commitments and environmental responsibilities. This includes driving improvements in waste reduction, recycling rates and reducing contamination, ensuring Nottingham’s waste services not only meet but exceed national targets and industry standards.

This is a forward-looking leadership role for someone who thrives on change, innovation, and collaboration—ensuring Nottingham’s waste services are robust, compliant, and ready for the future.

About You

The ideal candidate will have:

·         Extensive experience in project management, preferably within the local authority sector, with a strong track record of successfully delivering projects on time and within budget.

·         In-depth understanding of waste management principles, regulations, waste minimisation strategies, recycling systems, and waste disposal practices.

·         Proven leadership capabilities with the aptitude to motivate and guide project teams towards successful project completion.

·         Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills to assess complex waste management issues, identify solutions, and make informed decisions.
