Roads Department – Winter Seasonal Work

Hours of Work: Sunday – Thursday, 11:30 p.m. to 8:00 a.m.

Heavy Equipment Operator (2) $30.81/hr + 5% shift premium
Truck Driver (2) $28.64/hr + 5% shift premium

This work team will be responsible for delivering snow and ice control services during the Roads Department Seasonal Work Term as outlined in the Collective Agreement. This will include operating a variety of equipment including but not limited to tandem trucks, snowplows, sidewalk plows, and dump trucks etc., to ensure the safety and maintenance of municipal roadways and sidewalks during the winter season.
In addition to delivering snow and ice control, the Sub Foreman role will administer the day-to-day operations of the night shift crew. While working with the teams, the Sub Foreman position will be responsible for the afterhours customer service line, have the ability to troubleshoot and triage issues, call in staff, perform road and or contractor quality inspection, and/or escalate to the appropriate Supervisor as required. As an in-field leader the sub-foreman may be required to operate equipment as part of the regular snow clearing operation in response to staff shortages or operational need.
Responsibilities:
- Sands and plows municipal streets during the winter months
- Operates trucks and equipment of various sizes and weights to complete snow clearing operations
- Performs routine inspections and preventative maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor or designate.
In addition to the above responsibilities, the Sub Foreman will:
- Ensure day-to-day work assignments of the night crew are completed in a timely manner and to Supervisor’s expectations
- Provide hands on leadership, coaching, and oversight to the operators and drivers
- Assist Management by providing progress updates on work assignments as requested
- Perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled labouring work including shoveling, sanding, etc.
- Identify and report various items to Supervisor including performance of crew members, equipment and material usage etc.,
- Monitor contractors and hired equipment who are engaged in related activities
- Inspect and approve work completed by crews and or contractors within approved work plans
Qualifications:
- Grade 12 diploma or equivalent
- Three (3) to five (5) years’ previous work experience directly related to heavy duty equipment operation and maintenance would be an asset
- Must possess and maintain a clean valid “DZ” Ontario Driver’s License.
- Knowledge of equipment, methods and procedures used in road maintenance activities
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Demonstrated experience and working knowledge of the Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act and Regulations specifically concerning the requirements for job hazard analysis and the development of and training on safe work procedures
- Must be able to sit for prolonged periods of time
- Ability to work independently and as a team
- Ability to drive and operate a variety of heavy equipment under varying conditions
