We are seeking to appoint a highly motivated and experienced Project Manager to work within the Division of Psychological Medicine and Clinical Neurosciences, supporting the delivery of a major international research programme.
The postholder will lead the operational delivery of the 8-year Wellcome-funded longitudinal study, “Deep Microstructural Phenotyping of the Developing Brain.” This ambitious, multi-site, multi-disciplinary project involves advanced neuroimaging and cognitive and psychiatric assessments in children, including those with 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome. The role includes coordinating activities across Cardiff, Cambridge, and Nijmegen, and engaging with NHS clinics, schools, families, and international collaborators.
The successful applicant will have substantial experience managing complex research projects, ideally in a higher education or clinical setting. They will demonstrate excellent organisational and communication skills, a strong understanding of research governance and data protection, and the ability to lead distributed teams and manage large-scale budgets. This post is full time (35 hours per week), is fixed term until 30 June 2032, available from 1 March 2026 and is based in CUBRIC, Maindy Road, Cardiff.
The majority of roles at Cardiff University are currently operating under “blended working” arrangements, with staff having the flexibility to work partly from home and partly from the University campus depending on specific business requirements. Discussions around these arrangements can take place after the successful candidate has been appointed.
Salary: £41,064 - £46,049 per annum (Grade 6). Appointments to roles at Cardiff University are usually made at the bottom of scale unless in exceptional circumstances.

Job Description

The postholder will ensure the smooth running of all aspects of the project, including coordination across Cardiff, Cambridge, and Nijmegen, and liaising with NHS clinics, schools, families, and international collaborators.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Key Duties
Project Leadership & Coordination
- Lead day-to-day operations of the 8-year longitudinal study, ensuring milestones are met across all three data waves.
- Coordinate activities across multiple institutions and teams, including Cardiff University, University of Cambridge, Radboud University, and NHS clinics.
- Manage project timelines, deliverables, and reporting requirements to Wellcome and other stakeholders.
- Liaise with families, schools, charities, NHS clinics, and international collaborators.
- Support the organisation of annual PI meetings, postdoc exchanges, and External Advisory Board events.
- Facilitate Participant Advisory Groups and ensure inclusive, culturally sensitive engagement strategies.
- Oversee ethical approvals and ensure compliance with data protection and consent protocols.
- Coordinate secure data sharing and synthetic data pipelines in collaboration with CUBRIC’s Compute and Data Team.
- Support recruitment of 342 typically-developing children and 100 children with 22q11.2DS.
- Implement retention strategies including feedback reports for families and flexible scheduling.
- Support training and supervision of postdoctoral researchers, field workers, and research assistants.
- Facilitate cross-institutional training opportunities and knowledge exchange.
- Manage project budgets and procurement.
- Maintain accurate records and contribute to financial reporting and forecasting.

Qualifications and Education
- Degree/NVQ 4 or equivalent Professional membership/experience in project management.
- Substantial experience managing complex, multi-stakeholder research projects, ideally within a higher education or clinical research environment.
- Strong understanding of research governance, ethics, and data protection, particularly in studies involving human participants and sensitive data.
- Demonstrable experience in managing large-scale research budgets, including financial planning, monitoring, and reporting across multiple institutions or funding streams.
- Proven ability to liaise effectively with external funders (e.g. Wellcome Trust), ensuring timely and accurate reporting and compliance with funding requirements.
- Demonstrated excellence in organisation, interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to convey conceptually detailed and complex information clearly and professionally to a wide range of audiences.
- Evidence of ability to explore stakeholders’ needs and adapt services accordingly to ensure a high-quality, inclusive experience for participants and collaborators.
- Proven ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships and networks to support long-term project success.
- Proven ability to lead and coordinate distributed teams, solve complex problems creatively, and adapt to evolving project needs.
- Ability to manage competing priorities and deliver high-quality outcomes under pressure, including the coordination of regular team meetings and meetings of the External Advisory Board.
- Demonstrable experience in research data management, including handling datasets with varying levels of sensitivity and ensuring compliance with relevant policies, standards, and frameworks (e.g., GDPR). Familiarity with data management platforms and tools (e.g., REDCap or equivalent) would be advantageous.
