Position Summary:
The Student Wellbeing Specialist provides immediate support and case management for students facing complex mental health challenges. Acting as a key resource for faculty, staff, and counsellors, the role ensures timely referrals, safety assessments, and ongoing follow-up. As the first point of contact for at-risk students and concerned staff, the Specialist conducts rapid mental status evaluations and manages crises with expertise.
This position supports daily drop-ins and referrals, collaborating with Counselling Services as a step-down service for wellness checks and follow-ups. Using a solution-focused, stepped-care approach, the Specialist helps students set goals and navigate barriers to academic success. The role also coordinates with internal services like Counselling, Accessibility, Medical Centre, Student Conduct, The Learning Centre, Student Life, and Security, as well as external community resources.
Based primarily at Seneca@York, with occasional travel/rotation to Newnham and King campuses.
Responsibilities:
Case Management of Complex Student Mental Health
- Provides case management for students with complex needs, coordinating support across departments like Counselling, Academics, and Student Conduct.
- Offers consultative guidance to staff regarding students in distress.
- Conducts brief risk assessments, including suicide risk, and determines appropriate interventions or referrals.
- Builds strong relationships with campus and community health services.
- Adheres to privacy legislation (FIPPA) and exercises discretion in managing sensitive personal and health information (PIP).
Acts with care to prevent physical or emotional harm.
Administrative, Advisory & Liaison Functions
- Processes student withdrawal data and distributes to relevant departments.
- Maintains accurate documentation, generates reports, and provides statistical data.
- Issues temporary “Letters of Consideration” pending formal accommodation assessments.
- Provides information and consultation to students, faculty, staff, and external partners regarding ALS and Counselling services
Liaises with community resources, referring students to external mental health supports, including hospitals.
Qualifications:
Education
- Minimum completed 4- year degree or equivalent in Bachelor of Social Work, Counselling, Community Mental Health, Psychology
ASIST Training, Mental Health First Aid, or other Suicide intervention training.
Experience
- Minimum of three (3) years of related experience working with clients/ patients; in community mental health, mental health youth services, and/or developmental services.
- Experience working in an environment and directly supporting individuals with complex mental health needs.
Skills
- Demonstrated knowledge of current issues and applying best practices regarding student case management, student development theory, and student service delivery.
- Experience providing client services, programs, advocacy, coaching, and problem solving, and/or, risk assessment, crisis response.
- Experience with current computer software (e.g., MS office) and data management systems, including generating reports, performing data queries, and maintaining databases (e.g., spreadsheets).
