THIS IS A SEASONAL POSITION. These positions are up to 35 hours per week as required, on-site without standby pay. The contract dates and schedule are based on the weather, and the shifts are primarily day, afternoon and/or weekends.
Reporting to the Manager of Buildings and Grounds, the incumbent performs general maintenance on the College grounds including snow removal and ice control, repairs to parking lots, roadways, signage and grounds clean up. Additionally, the incumbent will assist with general building maintenance (moving furniture, cleaning shops, inventorying supplies, minor construction repairs, etc.) during times of little snow/icy/inclement weather activity. Specific duties include, but are not limited to:
• Operating manual and heavy equipment to remove and relocate snow on the college property
• Plowing, salting, both by machine and manually, shoveling doorways and walkways to ensure areas are safe
• Reporting repairs needed to any college equipment
• Performing minor repairs to equipment and building services if requested
• Demonstrating correct use of the equipment
• Reporting any unsafe conditions
• Completing accurate log sheets during and at end of each shift for submission
• Providing regular preventative care, cleaning and maintenance of equipment
• Providing general maintenance to the grounds around campus during periods of no snow
• Providing regular garbage collection from all exterior grounds including garbage containers and recycle bins
• Cleaning waste areas, organics shed and lose debris from the campus
• Installing and removing mobile speed humps/bumps, fills potholes, preparing areas for power sweeping, ensuring signs are in place and facing the correct direction, paint bollards, sign posts, lamp standard bases, re-grades gravel roadways and parking lots, installing and removing curb markers
• Clearing entrance ways of excess salt and debris
• General maintenance of road surfaces-filling potholes, cracks, etc.
• Installing and/or painting signs, posts, etc.
• Pre and post snow removal operations – tending to gardens, re-mulching spaces, etc.
• Assisting the Building Service Workers with general maintenance including but not limited to classroom layouts/setups, event setups, delivery of materials/supplies/furniture, etc.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Successfully completed a high school diploma
• A valid G driver’s license
• Must be able and willing to meet the physical demands of the position (physical ability to shovel snow, lift heavy bags of salt, scrape ice, etc.)
• A minimum of two years’ experience snow plowing and using heavy operation equipment
• Communication skills (oral and written)
• Proven ability to work independently and within a team environment, and follow instructions
• Available to work non-traditional hours including overnight, early morning, weekend, and afternoon shifts with limited advance notice
