The Cardiac and Vascular Program services the needs of inpatients and outpatients with cardiac disorders (valvular,
electrophysiological, adult congenital and coronary artery) as well as patients with vascular disease. The program
provides advanced cardiac care services including such procedures as cardiac catheterization, cardiac angioplasty,
cardiac surgery and electrophysiological procedures. Hamilton General is the tertiary cardiac surgical center supporting
the regional cardiac program for South Central Ontario and provides clinical service for approximately 1800 Cardiac
Surgical Cases yearly. The Cardiac Surgery Inpatient Unit, 5 south, is a 30 bed unit that provides pre- and post-operative
care to cardiac surgical patients.
The Physician Assistant (PA) will work under the direct supervision of an immediately available Attending Physician within
a multidisciplinary team in an academic cardiovascular surgery ward and in the cardiac surgery and rapid follow-up clinics.
The Physician Assistant will play a major role in facilitating consistent application of clinical protocols and continuity
of care, and will also identify patients with acute clinical issues common to pre- and post-op Cardiac Surgical Patients
and work within the multidisciplinary team to appropriately manage. The Physician Assistant will provide a full range
of physician assistant services in accordance with privileges granted, request consultation or referral with appropriate
physicians, clinics, or other health resources as indicated, order diagnostic tests as applicable, prescribe and dispense
medications as delineated by the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.

1. Graduate of the McMaster or The Consortium Physician Assistant Program
2. Registered with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO).
