Reporting to the Controller, responsibilities for this position include the following:

The Accountant is responsible for supporting the tactical financial reporting and reconciliation processes at Saskatoon Coop in collaboration with the Finance team. The Accountant provides direction to the Finance admin team to oversee the daily workflow for recaps, sales and productivity reports, invoice processes, and accounts payable/receivables. Responsible for leading Finance Administrative Representative Team Members, including recruitment, assignment of duties, performance management, and training and development.

Financial Processes

Assists with weekly reviews, financial reporting cycles, and provides guidance to in-scope finance team members regarding invoices to be processed for the Association. Ensures all accounting procedures and financial reports are completed in compliance with accounting standards and internal controls. Responsible for ensuring the Sales and Productivity reporting is run and distributed for the Association through the Finance Administrative Representatives. Responsible for coordinating and administering items relating to requests for expenditures for the Association.

Period End Reporting & Financial Management

Prepares period-end general ledger reconciliations, as well as period-end margin calculations to ensure accuracy of inventory records. Provides backup for the Finance Specialist with the preparation of capital asset sub-ledgers and reporting. Ensures timely submissions of monthly tax remittances. Supports the Senior Accountant in by co-ordinating the initial preparation and review of financial statements, and financial management reports for period-end and year-end processes. Prepares Finance department’s spreadsheets for the finance administration team (Gas Bar analysis, Food review, repairs and maintenance, etc). The Accountant is responsible for more standard, routine financial reporting processes, and will defer to the Senior Accountant for more complex and unique financial reporting challenges.

Budgeting & Audit

Through the annual budgeting process, provides standard technical supports regarding . finance owned areas including excel workbooks, insurance, depreciation, taxes. Licences, occupancy. Supports the Senior Accountant and Controller in the preparation of the year-end financial statements working papers. Upon direction from the Senior Accountant, supports regular audit requests for all balance sheet and operating statement samples

Talent Management & Team Member Training

Communicates and shares relevant information required for alignment and contributing to the employee experience for direct reports (in-scope team members) of the Finance department. Ensures all team members are fully trained and are using the appropriate resources, and have the necessary tools to do their work. Responsible for ongoing coaching, recruitment, onboarding, retention, training and employee relations in consultation with Human Resources and the Team Leader. Applies operational knowledge in key performance areas to support team assignments to achieve department objectives. Communicates the alignment of team members’ work to the Finance department’s scorecard and organizational priorities.

Technology Support

Supports Team Leaders in the setup or inquiries of DRT and JDE requests for new or existing employees. Completes paperwork or record keeping for technology requests or support. From the direction of the Controller, provides support for POS setup or maintenance, as well as supports for moneris / gateway setup for new or existing locations.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s of Commerce Degree with a major in Finance or Accounting

  • Minimum 1+ year experience in a managerial Accounting related role. Team Leadership is considered an asset.
