SUMMARY:

Performs nursing duties as they pertain to office nursing, which includes routine medical exams and/or procedures and tests in conjunction with patient visits. Assists physicians and advanced practice providers as necessary. May support visit documentation and equipment care/maintenance. Responsibilities also include providing patient education, triaging patient care issues, assisting physicians with procedures, onboarding new medical assistants, and supporting the day-to-day functions of the office. Knowledge of HIPAA and OSHA regulations required.


PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Assists with patient triage for providers.
  • Obtains patient history and chief complaint.
  • Obtains lab specimens, gives injections, and performs routine medical tests. 
  • Implements clinical and technical aspects of nursing care in accordance with prescribed policies, procedures, and techniques.
  • Assisting with review of test results under guidance of a physician and notifying patients of results when applicable. 
  • Accurately follows instructions and carries out established procedures or protocols when assisting practitioner with treatments and examinations.
  • Provides and documents pertinent information, education, and instruction to patients and/or families regarding patient’s condition, limitations, and course of care, with the knowledge and oversight of the practitioner.
  • Documents nursing observations, assessments, medications, treatments and other care given.
  • May sterilize equipment and perform light housekeeping chores.
  • Maintains inventory of supplies as required.
  • Maintains skills competence and assumes responsibility for professional development and ongoing education.
  • Participates with quality assurance and quality improvement activities.
  • Supports the training and growth of medical assistants in the office with regards to all aspects of patient care including but not limited:
    • Set-up of exam rooms.
    • Proper handling, cleaning and disposal of all contaminated instruments and/or materials mandated by OSHA.
    • Packaging of instruments for sterilization.
    • Proper labeling, handling, and processing of all surgical specimens to ensure daily delivery of specimens to Pathology Lab.
  • Collaborating with the practice manager to support medical assistants with continued proficiency and compliance with defined expectations, policies and procedures. 
  • Ordering medical supplies as required to ensure proper upkeep and stocking of supplies in examination rooms.
  • Enhancing professional expertise and knowledge through participation in appropriate educational activities,
  • Responsible for any other duties, clinical or administrative, that facilitate the overall improvement in office flow and patient care.
  • All other duties as required.


MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with a license to practice in the State of Rhode Island.
  • BLS certified.
  • Ability to represent the organization and serve consumers in a professional manner and promote a positive image of the organization and its services.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to deal effectively with patients and their representatives. 
  • Ability to exchange information in a professional manner with coworkers and patients.
  • Thorough knowledge of Universal Precautions as well as proper use of personal protective equipment.
  • Physical requirements: Position requires long periods of standing.
