Duties
Perform a wide variety of difficult and complex laboratory tests and examinations in the chemistry, serology, hematology, urinalysis, immunohematology, and microbiology sections of an MTF laboratory.,Select appropriate test methodology to use and recognizes when test values are positive or exceed a defined decision limit, based on the results that determine the need for additional testing.,Provide presumptive level bioterrorism agency identification in support of Home Land Defense (HLD) and oversees proficiency training in this area of the lab.,Provide training for laboratory personnel.,Submit specimens for testing at reference laboratories.,Ensure proper collection and processing of specimens for reference laboratory testing.,Perform fluorescent antibody tests such as the fluorescent treponemal antibody absorption test, a serologic test for syphilis, and the fluorescent antibody test for lupus erythematosus.,Ensure detected testing errors are resolved and specimens are retested before results are reported.,Maintain appropriate quality control data specific for individual tests performed.,Input data and results in hospital-wide computer system making corrections as required for proper diagnosis and treatment of the patient.

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Basic Requirement: Medical TechnicianSpecialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing testing procedures in a clinical laboratory; calibrating or maintaining clinical laboratory instruments; and documenting results through clinical laboratory automated systems. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06). OR Education: One full year (18 semester hours) of progressively higher level graduate education in a field directly related to the work of the position such as Medical Lab Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, Chemistry, or Microbiology. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) AND Certification Requirement: Certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Medical Technologist (AMT) or other board or registry deemed comparable by Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs (OASD(HA)) or their designee as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT); Medical Technologist (MT); or Medical Lab Scientist (MLS). (Copy of certification must be submitted with application package.)
