Job Description
This occupation requires the disassembly, assembly, modification, checkout and servicing of missile flight hardware, missile handling support equipment, launch complex support equipment and MESSA evaluation support equipment in preparation for flight test or proof of engineering design.
Includes participating in proofing of SPALTs, PADs and TADs. May perform various support shops tasks in Carpenter, Fabrication, Maintenance and Paint Shops, as required.
WORK PERFORMED
Plan organization of work, methods to use and sequence of operations necessary for completion and final acceptance of assigned tasks for associated missile structures, missile structural components, missile mechanical systems and missile handling, processing, launch and MESSA test support equipment, as required.
Work from such general data as provided by preliminary design drawings, sketches and/or oral
engineering information.
Perform in connection with the above, such typical structural or mechanical operations as: Check vehicle structures, structural components for fit, arrangement, operation, etc. Perform necessary fabrication, modification, assembly, and installation work. Layout and/or establish reference points or stations and align such structural items. Assist in the assembly of Assemble Thrust Vector Control (TVC) Generators and Gas Hydraulic
Actuators (GHAs) and their installation on motors. Mate missile sections and accomplish all necessary connections. Check clearances and make functional checkout of all mechanical items and systems to engineering specifications. Remove and repair any component not meeting required specifications. Clean, strip and mask structures and components in preparation for paint. Number, stencil and apply paint and decals in accordance with specifications. Sign off structural and mechanical items as complete and assist with countdown operations
including the positioning of the Missile Access Stand used for pre-flight testing covering the launch pad prior to flight. Perform all development and experimental work operations necessary to accomplish the foregoing, including proofing new items or altering the original position of components previously installed. Work with, or assist, mechanics in other fields of specialization as required by performing work of the level of difficulty described herein. To this end, perform periodic work in the Carpenter, Paint, Machine and Fabrication Shops assisting in task accomplishment, as required. Also perform work at launch complex in support of maintenance and preservation of launch support equipment, as required.
TYPICAL MATERIALS, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
Materials worked on: Ferrous and non-ferrous metals and related alloys, non-metallic materials. Materials worked with: Fuels chemicals or other propellants; structural and mechanical parts and assemblies; paints compounds and lubricants. Tools used: Mechanics’ hand tools, special metal fitting, fabrication and assembly tools;
precision measuring devices, etc. Equipment used: Bench and basic shop machines and equipment, paint sprayers, motor vehicles, cranes and other handling equipment.
Basic Qualifications
• Set up and operate various types of basic shop forming and cutting machines and equipment.
• Possess a working knowledge of the physical and working
characteristics of missile structural materials, parts and assemblies.
• Work from incomplete design information and fill in details from practical experience or typical procedures.
• Use shop mathematics, including trigonometry
• Work with the proper knowledge of safety practices, regulations and ordnance handling techniques and practices while working with ordnance or under actual or potentially hazardous conditions.
• In order to hold this classification, an employee must possess all certification and all licenses
required.
• May require the ability to handle program peculiar equipment/material.
• May be required to have proper classification of commercial Driver’s License required by the State of Florida to operate material handling equipment normally used by employees in this classification.
**Please note, this position requires DOD Secret at a minimum to start. Top Secret Security clearance must be obtained. US Citizenship is required.
