Job Title: Energy Modeling Intern
Job Summary
The Energy Modeler Intern will support the Energy and Sustainability team in developing building energy models, analyzing performance data, and identifying opportunities for improved efficiency and sustainability in mechanical and electrical system design. This position provides hands-on experience in the building design process and exposure to real-world projects in diverse sectors such as commercial, institutional, and healthcare facilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the creation of detailed energy models using software such as IES-VE, eQUEST, OpenStudio, EnergyPlus, or TRACE 3D Plus.
- Collect and input building design data (architectural, mechanical, electrical, occupancy, and schedules) into energy simulation tools.
- Perform sensitivity analyses and review results to assess building performance and energy conservation opportunities.
- Support compliance modeling for ASHRAE 90.1, LEED, and other sustainability rating systems.
- Work with mechanical engineers and sustainability professionals to interpret results and propose design alternatives.
- Help prepare project documentation, reports, and visual presentations for internal and client use.
- Stay current with building codes, modeling standards, and emerging energy technologies.
Qualifications
- Working toward a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Energy Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Interest or coursework in building performance modeling, thermodynamics, HVAC systems, or sustainability.
- Familiarity with energy modeling or analysis software (preferred but not required).
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and general engineering software tools.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team and communicate technical results clearly.
