About the Department

Under general supervision, the Maintenance Repairman 1st Class performs skilled work in the maintenance of painted structures, plumbing fixtures, woodwork, and buildings.  An employee in this class is expected to work independently in performing the more difficult assignments.  Work may be assigned on the basis of an employee's major area of skill and knowledge but an employee is expected to perform work in a variety of general maintenance areas.

Position Duties

  • Performs preventive building maintenance duties to include small interior painting
  • Troubleshoots minor maintenance problems involving electrical, structural, plumbing, and equipment repair or replacement
  • Performs routine plumbing repairs such as unstopping toilets, sinks or urinals, and leaking faucets
  • Performs routine electrical repairs such as changing light bulbs or fluorescent lamps and assists in replacing light fixtures
  • Purchases supplies, equipment, and materials necessary to complete projects
  • Repairs and replaces door knobs or locks, repairs door closures, patches holes in walls
  • May operate a variety of power tools and shop equipment
  • Cleans and replaces all air condition filters on routine schedules 
  • Performs routine manual and clerical duties in stock handling and maintaining routine records 
  • Assists supervisor with distributing storeroom items to authorized personnel and providing other office services
  • Checks inventory and orders replacements through supervisor
  • Assists with the pickup and delivery of incoming and outgoing mail, documents, packages, and other items as assigned.
  • Performs other work related duties in transporting personnel and overseeing routine janitorial work performed on buildings
  • Performs all work in accordance with safety regulations, company policy and OSHA standards
     
     

Minimum Qualifications

  • Thorough knowledge of one or more of the building trades
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable safety rules and regulations, occupational hazards and precautions to be observed
  • Knowledge of trades related to building maintenance and repair
  • Knowledge of a variety of building maintenance procedures and techniques
  • Knowledge of machinery, equipment, and tools necessary for the maintenance and repair of public buildings
  • Ability to perform mechanical tasks of a routine nature, operate truck or other automotive equipment
  • Skilled in reading and following blueprints and assembly instructions
  • Skilled in the using hand and power tools
  • Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
     

Other Qualifications

High school diploma, or equivalent, including or supplemented by courses in the building trades, and five (5) years of experience in building maintenance work.
