About the Department

The City of Sioux City is currently accepting applications for the position of Automotive Equipment Operator I.

This role involves performing tasks related to the maintenance and repair of city infrastructure, including streets, the water distribution system, and storm/sanitary sewers. Responsibilities include operating a variety of equipment such as trucks on construction crews, flushers, valve trucks, backhoes, jet trucks, snowplows, and other machinery as needed. Employees may also perform semi-skilled or unskilled laboring tasks.

This is a physically demanding position. Candidates must be in good physical condition to meet the requirements of the job.

Work hours are Monday through Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Overtime and shift work may be required.

A Class A CDL with tanker endorsement must be obtained within six months of hire.

Position Duties

  • Drives and operates a truck or other related automotive light equipment.
  • Operates equipment to move and transport personnel and materials including dirt, rock, gravel, tree limbs, and debris to and from various job sites throughout the City.
  • Performs routine preventative maintenance schedules; cleans, fuels and maintains assigned equipment; conducts walk around inspections prior to and after operating equipment.
  • Operates various small or light equipment including front end loader, snow blower, tree grinder, flusher, compressor, skid loader, spreader, and small utility tractor.
  • Sets up or installs various traffic control signs, cones, barricades, and snow fences.
  • Mows, trims and maintains turf in parks, cemeteries and similar areas.
  • Digs holes and trenches, transplants trees, opens and closes grave sites.
  • Participates in all snow and ice control duties as assigned.
  • Patrols park areas to pick up trash and debris, opens and closes cemeteries.
  • Washes and fuels equipment.
  • Responds to after hours calls.
  • Assists crew with asphalt and tar applications, mud jacking, flushing sand, etc. operations.
  • Assists with the installation and repair of playground equipment and tree trimming operations.
  • Assists in loading and unloading materials onto and off the truck, cleaning up spills and debris.
  • May serve as the lead person on a small crew involved in construction/maintenance activities.
  • Maintains regular and punctual attendance at work.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with officials, other agencies, fellow employees, and the general public.
  • Regularly lifts up to 25 pounds and occasionally lifts up to 50 pounds.
  • Expected to temporarily perform duties outside of normal classification in the event of a declared emergency.  In the event that an employee is excused from work other than being sick, they will be required to report to work in a state of declared emergency.

Job Knowledge:  Complete working knowledge of the practices and principals of operating, maintaining and servicing trucks and light equipment, and of laws and regulations governing the operation of trucks and equipment including accepted safety policies and practices, hazards and precautions.  Ability and skill in the safe operation of various equipment used in the construction and maintenance of City property and right of ways.
 
Language Ability and Interpersonal CommunicationRequires effective communication skills and the ability to provide effective and courteous assistance to customers (external and internal).  Requires the ability to speak effectively with fellow employees and customers; read in English; apply common sense understanding to the work process, procedures, programs and services; and to provide and follow verbal and written instructions.
 
Physical Requirements:  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit.  The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and taste or smell.  The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear.  The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
 
Work EnvironmentWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions with 100% of the work being performed in the field.  The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles and vibration.  The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme cold and extreme heat; and risk of electrical shock.  The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

Other Qualifications

Must be able obtain a Class A commercial driver's license with airbrake and tanker endorsement within six months from the date of hire.

Preference for graduation from standard high school or GED equivalent and some prior work experience. Driving, operating or servicing trucks or related automotive equipment, or any combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
