Position Summary

This position requires the Lead Technologist to direct, supervise, and coordinate functions and activities in all areas of the clinical laboratory. The Lead Technologist must perform all clinical procedures in all areas of the clinical laboratory and must be capable of interpreting quality control data and identifying problem areas and have demonstrated problem solving capabilities. The Lead Technologist must be able to exercise independent judgment regarding technically oriented problems and problem solving.

 

Job Duties & Essential Functions

  • Performs clinical laboratory procedures proficiently in all areas of the clinical laboratory. 
  • Performs special procedures in those areas of the clinical laboratory so designated. 
  • Utilizes and can interpret results from quality control materials used in all areas of the clinical laboratory. Identifies and can solve problem areas regarding quality control. Review of monthly quality control reports and makes changes as necessary. 
  • Records the results of all laboratory tests and quality control procedures performed.  
  • Enters all required data into laboratory computer system.  
  • Must have theoretical and working knowledge of all laboratory instrumentation. 
  • Performs STAT or emergency testing as required. knowledge of all laboratory instrumentation. 
  • Must be familiar with protocol for troubleshooting and proper maintenance of laboratory instrumentation in all areas of the clinical laboratory. 
  • Must maintain a clean working environment. 
  • Will function as a supervisor to review daily and shift quality control on off shifts, weekends and when laboratory manager is not available.
  • Performs all related duties, not included, but required by the laboratory management. 
  • Must follow department infection control and safety procedures.  
  • Maintains departmental inventory. 
  • Maintains all records required for approval by the New York State Department of Health. 
  • Adheres to the Hospital and Laboratory Policy and Procedure Manuals. 
  • Assists in training new technologists and phlebotomists. 
  • Capable of working independently without supervisory assistance. 
  • Directs, supervises, and coordinates technical functions and activities in any or all divisions of the clinical laboratory. 
  • Inspects and observes personnel practices and informs manager when violations or issues occur. 
  • Assists staff in technical procedures as required. 
  • Assists laboratory manager with duties as required. 
  • Cooperates with all personnel in the proper conduct of the department.
  • Maintains ethical relationships.
  • Adheres to hospital and departmental rules and regulations.
  • Participates in in-service programs.

 

Required Experience & Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology or related science from an accredited college or university
  • Ten (10) years clinical laboratory experience
  • Certification as a Medical Technologist from ASCP
  • New York State license as a Medical Technologist
  • Proven managerial skills
  • Good oral and written communication skills 

 

Physical Demands:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate with patients, office staff and medical providers. The employee must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.   

  • Communicate orally and written. 
  • Use telecommunication devices. 
  • Must have fine motor dexterity to complete bimanual/bilateral tasks. 
  • Ability to stoop, bend, and lift 20-liter containers. 
  • Exposed to the danger of infection or harm from pathogenic material or chemicals. 
  • Occasional prolonged standing or walking.  
  • Subject to eyestrain.

Anticipated Pay Range: 

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established based on relevant experience. The above salary range (or hiring range) represents SBEILH’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Prior to start date, the selected candidate must meet the following requirements:

  • Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Eastern Long Island’s Employee Health Services *
  • Complete electronic reference check with a minimum of three (3) professional references.
  • Successfully complete a 4 panel drug screen*
  • Meet Regulatory Requirements for pre-employment screenings.
  • Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).

 

Failure to comply with any of the above requirements could result in a delayed start date and/or revocation of the employment offer. 

 

*The Human Resources department will be responsible for any fee incurred for examination.

As part of Stony Brook Medicine, Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital (SBELIH) combines the best in academic and community medicine, improving access to advanced medical care for residents of the North Fork and Shelter Island. With 70 beds, SBELIH is Suffolk County’s first hospital, serving the North Fork since 1905. SBELIH provides care to 25,000 year-round residents and expanding to 60,000 summer residents with comprehensive healthcare solutions, including behavioral health, medical-surgical, orthopedics and general surgery, wound care, interventional pain management and GI, advanced ambulatory care, diagnostic, and physical therapy services. The hospital is also a clinical campus and training site for Stony Brook Medicine, with its first SBELIH Psychiatry resident having graduated in 2022.
