Equipment Mechanic: $45,521 - $71,055

Performs advanced repair/maintenance and inspection related work for fleet vehicles and equipment in the Fleet Operations Division Shop or a District Maintenance Section. Inspects work performed by shop mechanics and/or contracted vendors. Work may require maintenance and repair of heavy equipment used in the construction of highways/bridges. Work may require contact with other governmental agencies and private contractors. Employees at this level perform independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
Essential Duties:
- Travels and performs work in other shops throughout the state as required.
- Completes repair order paperwork and accurately enters data into fleet information management system
- Orders, picks up and delivers parts, materials, tools, and operates equipment and vehicles to include heavy equipment.
- Performs quality assurance/analysis on repaired vehicles and equipment.
- Prepares vehicles for use by checking for required safety features such as first aid kits, fire extinguishers and mobile
radios. - Troubleshoots, tests and repairs electrical systems, electronic ignitions and fuel injection systems.
- Uses computerized diagnostic analyzer systems and performs complex diagnostic work on vehicles
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
Experience: 4 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent).
- Associate's degree in Automotive and/or Diesel Technology may substitute for 2 year's experience.
- Certificates of course completion from a Technical Training Institute in Automotive and Diesel Technology may substitute for experience on a year for year basis.
Licenses and Certifications:
- Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
- Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
- Mtr Veh St Inspector-Licensed. If performing State safety vehicle inspections must have or obtain a State Inspector's license.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Commercial driver’s license (CDL)
Competencies:
- Mechanical equipment operation and maintenance
- Basic vehicle mechanics, maintenance and repair procedures
- Troubleshooting, repairing and calibrating electronic and mechanical components and subsystems
- Mechanical repair procedures for diesel, gasoline, CNG and LPG engines
- Follow applicable safety standards, practices and procedures-
- Read and interpret electrical diagrams and schematics
- Coordinating labor, materials, and equipment
- Diagnosing problems and repairing equipment to include electronic and mechanical components and subsystems according to
defined codes and specifications - Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
- Subject to noise
- Subject to vibration
- Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals
- Subject to atmospheric conditions-fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation
- Subject to air and/or skin exposure to oils and other cutting fluids
- Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
- Works frequently in small/crawl spaces; manholes; areas that can cause claustrophobia
- Works in narrow aisles or passageways
- Sedentary work: Lift up to 10 lbs at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools
- Stooping-bending body downward and forward by bending spine at waist
- Kneeling-bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee(s)
- Crouching-bending body downward and forward by bending leg(s) and spine

- This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical.
- Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.

- Must be able to report for duty within 60 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
- Will be required to work alternate schedules during an emergency response situation such as adverse weather events.
- Will be required to travel to other district/division shops within the state as needed.
