Internal Redeployment Only - Finance Officer
A position is available for a Finance Officer to provide support in the day-to-day running of the Finance Office at Cardiff School of Biosciences. The successful candidate will have significant experience of working in a finance office environment, ability to work as an effective team member, providing advice and guidance to other team members where necessary.
This is a full-time (35 hours per week), fixed term position covering maternity leave and is available from 1st December 2025 until 9th October 2026.
Salary: £28,031 - £31,236 per annum (Grade 4)
This role is eligible to be offered on a blended working basis, meaning that as well as spending time working on campus you can also choose to spend some time working from another location, e.g. your home. Job Description
Your primary role will be to manage, alongside other Finance Officers, the operations of the Biosciences’ Finance Office including supervisory support of the Finance Assistant(s).
Duties and Responsibilities
Key Duties
- To assist the Finance Office Manager with the operations of the Finance Office. This will include:
- Distribute, co-ordinate and monitor tasks in the Finance Office.
- To ensure that work is processed to a high standard and strict deadlines are met.
- To build relationships and contacts with individuals within the University and externally to facilitate the exchange of information on financial matters.
- In consultation with the Finance Office Manager, to operate all financial procedures effectively and ensure compliance with the University’s Financial Regulations.
- Managing the engagement process for casual staff and visitors.
- Managing the monthly demonstrator and overtime time sheets.
- Managing the creation of short course accounts and reconciliation of such accounts.
- Managing the Research Hub Facility recharging processes.
- To be responsible for the reconciliation of the PDQ Card Reader and School Purchase Cards.
- To gain an excellent working knowledge of Oracle (CU Finance system) to approve orders, interrogate the system to resolve queries and run financial reports.
- To publish and co-ordinate the distribution of monthly reports to appropriate members of staff for both School accounts/budgets and Research Projects.
- To monitor staff research accounts on a regular (at least monthly) basis, ensuring that they are kept within budget and advise relevant staff when problems arise.
- Assist RIS with research grant queries and liaise with appropriate staff to ensure that the grants are being managed according to the guidelines and procedures set out in contracts.
- To assist the Senior Finance Officer with the management of PhD funding.
- To maintain an up-to-date knowledge of University Financial Regulations and procedures.
- To assist staff with negotiating the SAP Concur and Travel Bureau processes.
- In consultation with the School Manager, to participate in the recruitment process of casual staff within the school, as appropriate.
- Work with others to make recommendations to improve our ways of working.
- You may be asked to perform other duties occasionally which are not included above, but which will be consistent with the role.

Essential Criteria
- Ability to communicate in writing clearly, concisely, and effectively to provide detailed advice and guidance on Finance procedures and practices.
- Evidence of a good standard of numeracy and IT literacy.
- Experience of working in an administrative role or environment and ability to set up standard office systems and procedures, making improvements to these as appropriate.
- Specialist knowledge of working in a finance office environment.
- Ability to communicate specialist and complex information effectively and professionally to a range of customers with varying levels of understanding.
- Ability to advise and influence key stakeholders in your area of work.
- Ability to explore customers’ needs and adapt the service you provide accordingly to ensure a quality service is delivered.
- Ability to use your initiative and creativity to solve problems, respond to queries and make recommendations, identifying and proposing practical solutions.
- Ability to work unsupervised to deadlines, planning, setting and monitoring your priorities and those of the team.
