The Institute for Astronomy (IfA) at the University of Hawai'i (UH) invites applications for a tenure-track, Assistant Professor (F3) faculty position at the IfA facility in Honolulu. Applicants with expertise in the study of stars and planets---within the solar system and beyond--- are particularly well-positioned, but candidates in all fields of astronomy are strongly encouraged to apply.  

The IfA has strong research groups in most areas of astrophysics, supported in part by access to all observational facilities on Maunakea and Haleakala, with significant expertise in extragalactic, time domain, stellar, exoplanetary, planetary, and solar astronomy, as well as astronomical instrumentation and wide-field sky surveys. majority of our faculty are based in Honolulu at the UH Manoa campus where the undergraduate and graduate classes are taught.  

The IfA faculty are sited at three (3) facilities on the islands of O'ahu (in Honolulu), Hawai'i (in Hilo), and Maui (in Pukalani).  All faculty regardless of location participate equally in the teaching program, research, and academic life at the IfA.

In 2025-2026, the IfA seeks to fill two (2) positions starting Fall 2026, one (1) on O'ahu and one (1) on Maui, as part of an ongoing faculty hiring plan through the 2020’s. Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Undertaking a program of astronomical research in stars, planets, or the astronomical systems they inhabit.
  2. Teaching graduate or undergraduate courses in the field of   Astronomy, mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, and supervising post-doctoral fellows.
  3. Contributing to and enhancing the intellectual environment of the IfA.
  4. Serving on committees for IfA, UHM campus, University, and the community.
Minimum Qualifications
  • A Ph.D. in astronomy, astrophysics, or a closely related discipline from a college or university of recognized standing. Candidates who are All-But-Dissertation (ABD) may be considered, however, selectee at this rank must have their Ph.D. conferred by their employment start date.
  • Demonstrated ability and/or experiences in securing competitive research grants, conducting research, publishing research findings in peer-reviewed journals. Primary authorship of peer-reviewed publications and regular presentations of scholarly abstracts at national and international conferences should be demonstrated.
  • Ability to teach effectively at the undergraduate and graduate level.
  • Ability to contribute effectively to the intellectual environment of the IfA
  • Ability to perform service activities (such as committee work or outreach).
  • Professionalism in meeting and conferring with others.

  • Ability to lead a research program involving students and post-docs
