About the job.
We’re looking for an Abnormal Loads Senior Route Planner to join our team based in Birmingham. You’ll be responsible for reviewing applications against legislation and government policy, gathering and analysing information to reach decisions, supporting the wider team and carrying out quality assurance checks in order to help achieve the goals and targets of the team. You will also be liaising with various stakeholders, both internally and externally, planning routes and re-routes necessary for the abnormal loads to travel safely on the public highway.
This role will be hybrid working, where you’ll spend two days per week in our office in Three Snow Hill, Birmingham.
- Case-manage initial decisions for the approval of Special Order and VR1 abnormal indivisible load movements in line with Department for Transport and National Highways policies, processes and service standards.
- Ensure accurate records are kept demonstrating compliance with Abnormal Load policies and to support the development and implementation of abnormal and indivisible load decision making processes.
- Authorise Special Order and VR1 permits on behalf of the Secretary of State (SoS).
- Peer Quality Assurance checking of Special Order permits prior to submission to Team Leader for authorisation.
- Answer standard and non-standard enquiries and act as a point of contact internally and externally, providing information to stakeholders to support service delivery, customer service.
- Contribute to the review, development and testing of business processes and systems to ensure that these are fit for purpose.
About you.
- Experience collating and evaluating information in order to reach an informed decision in accordance with policy.
- Good attention to detail; being able to analyse complex information and review colleagues work by identifying inconsistent data.
- Demonstrate initiative and effective problem-solving skills.
- Good communication, engagement and customer service skills; be able to engage and present information to both colleagues and internal / external stakeholders in order to build and maintain effective working relationships.
- Understanding of the abnormal load procedures and processes, and the relevant legislation – desirable.

External candidates will be offered a starting salary at the lower end of the pay scale, while current employees will be appointed in accordance with our established pay policy.
