Job Summary 

The Optometric Technician/Patient Services Representative provides both clinical and front-office support to ensure efficient and compassionate delivery of optometric care. This role conducts patient pre-testing, assists with diagnostic procedures, and supports the optometrist in examinations and eyewear services. Additionally, the technician performs patient registration, insurance verification, and payment collection to maintain accurate records and smooth patient flow. The position bridges technical care with customer service, ensuring each patient receives quality, efficient, and financially transparent care.   

Qualifications / Requirements 

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; an associate degree or certification in optometric assisting, medical assisting, or a related healthcare field preferred.  

  • Certification as a Certified Paraoptometric (CPO) or willingness to obtain within 12 months preferred.  

  • Experience in an optometry or ophthalmology setting is strongly preferred.  

  • Bilingual ability is preferred but not required.  

  • Proficiency with computers and willingness to learn electronic health record (EHR) systems.  

  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.  

  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment and maintain accuracy.  

  • Demonstrated commitment to quality service and teamwork.

Essential Functions 

  • Conducts preliminary testing including visual acuity, autorefraction, and retinal imaging.  

  • Documents patient history, medications, and symptoms accurately in the EHR.  

  • Prepares patients for examinations and assists during diagnostic or contact lens procedures.  

  • Provides patient education regarding eyewear care, lens use, and eye health.  

  • Orders, dispenses, and adjusts eyewear; maintains optical inventory and displays.  

  • Cleans, calibrates, and properly shuts down diagnostic equipment.  

  • Greets and registers patients in a professional, welcoming manner.  

  • Verifies insurance eligibility and benefits prior to service.  

  • Collects applicable copays, eyewear payments, and other fees; posts transactions accurately in the EHR.  

  • Balances daily cash, credit card, and check receipts, preparing deposits for review.  

  • Educates patients about the sliding fee scale, payment plans, and HFHC financial policies.  

  • Coordinates with billing staff to address insurance alerts and documentation requirements.  

  • Schedules and confirms appointments; manages recall lists and follow-ups.  

  • Answers phones, returns messages, and routes inquiries to appropriate staff.  

  • Maintains a clean, organized front office and exam area.  

  • Supports patient access to the Patient Portal and promotes use of HFHC services.  

  • Assists with reporting, documentation, and other duties assigned. 

  • Other duties as assigned. 

Physical Requirements 

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. 

  • This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling and stooping all day, but may also involve long periods of sitting or computer-based work. 

  • This employee must frequently lift and/or move items over 30 pounds. 

  • Must be able to lift, carry and handle equipment, supplies and other work site materials according to position requirements.
