About the Department

The City of Avondale has an opportunity for a Mental Health Therapist to join the Southwest Family Advocacy Center.

This position is funded by a Victims of Crime Act Grant (VOCA).


The Mental Health Therapist will provide fulltime individual, family, and group counseling to primary and secondary victims of child sexual and physical abuse and adult victims of sexual assault and domestic violence who are involved with a law enforcement investigation initiated through the partners of the Southwest Family Advocacy Center.

Position Duties

Provides direct therapeutic services to victims of abuse, including children, adults, and their non-offending family members. Provides crisis counseling, family stabilization, clinical assessments, and short-term counseling utilizing evidence-based, trauma-informed treatment modalities. Administers, scores and interprets evidence-based assessment tools. Ensures all practices align with National Children’s Alliance (NCA) standards and guidelines.

Plans, facilitates, and conducts group counseling and psychoeducation sessions for victims and their non-offending caregivers. Assesses client needs and coordinates appropriate referrals for long-term trauma-focused therapy and support services.

Prepares, documents, and maintains comprehensive clinical records, including intake documentation, assessments, treatment plans, progress and contact notes, notices of privacy practices, and releases of information.

Ensures compliance with all reporting requirements outlined in grant contracts. Prepares and submits timely reports and statistical data in accordance with grant requirements.

Participates in multidisciplinary team meetings to provide clinical insight, contribute to case consultations, and collaborate with team members to ensure coordinated, comprehensive care for clients.

Participates in judicial proceedings as required.

Establishes and maintains appropriate and ethical therapeutic relationships.

Attends trainings, meetings, and agency events.

Minimum Qualifications

A Master's Degree in Counseling is required.

Knowledge of evidence-based brief trauma treatment modalities (e.g., TF-CBT, EMDR, PCIT, CBT, CPT); symptoms and treatment of PTSD; dynamics of child sexual and physical abuse; child development; adult sexual assault and domestic violence; and the functions of the criminal justice system and child advocacy centers.

A minimum of two (2) years of clinical experience providing trauma-focused mental health counseling services to victims of abuse, including children, adolescents, adults, and their families.

Must be a Licensed Associate Counselor (LAC) or Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC).

Must be able to successfully pass a comprehensive background check and a psychological exam.
