Black Cultural Zone Community Development Corporation (BCZ CDC) is seeking a Facilities Manager with a demonstrated track record in maintaining physical spaces, ensuring safety, and managing projects.

This role is responsible for the overall upkeep, safety, and functionality of all BCZ CDC physical spaces (hubs, offices, etc.), and ensuring its long-term operational integrity. The Manager will perform routine maintenance, manage special facility-related projects (renovations, upgrades), and ensure compliance with safety and operational standards. This position is vital for advancing BCZ CDC's mission to unapologetically center Black arts, culture, and economics in East Oakland and to guide the organization toward sustainability and maximizing its mission impact. We are seeking someone who is connected to and has a love for the East Oakland community. WHAT YOU'LL DO

As Facilities Manager, you will be responsible for a comprehensive range of facility functions, ensuring the safety, fiscal integrity, and strategic advancement of BCZ CDC's physical assets.

  • Lead Maintenance and Upkeep: Lead and coordinate general and preventative maintenance for all physical spaces (plumbing, electrical, HVAC, grounds, etc.).
  • Manage Special Projects: Manage special facility projects, including renovations, upgrades, and construction, ensuring timely and on-budget completion.
  • Safety and Compliance: Develop, implement, and enforce safety protocols and procedures to ensure a safe environment for staff, tenants, and community members.
  • Contractor and Vendor Management: Schedule and manage facility service contractors (janitorial, security, mechanical, etc.).
  • Security and Emergency Response: Manage building security systems and access procedures, responding to and addressing on-site emergencies or issues.
  • Financial Contribution: Contribute to the development and adherence of the annual facilities budget.

QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate for this role is an operational thinker with meticulous attention to detail and the highest safety and ethical standards.

  • Education & Experience: You must have a Bachelor's degree in Facilities Management, Engineering, or a related technical field with a minimum of seven years of progressively responsible facilities management experience. Alternatively, a technical certification in a relevant trade (e.g., HVAC, Electrical) with a minimum of ten years of relevant experience is acceptable. A minimum of five years of direct supervisory experience is required.
  • Specialized Knowledge: The role requires a strong working knowledge of building systems, including HVAC, electrical, and plumbing. Expertise in local building codes, safety regulations (OSHA), and accessibility standards (ADA) is a requirement. Practical experience managing capital projects (renovations/construction) is highly desirable.
  • Abilities: You must have strong leadership qualities, with the ability to provide decisive guidance in emergency situations. Excellent written, oral, and presentation skills are essential to communicate clearly and effectively with contractors, staff, and community members. You must also be highly organized, self-disciplined, and able to manage multiple responsibilities with minimal supervision.

This is a full-time, salary, exempt position. It is a remote/hybrid role, with a requirement of up to four in-person days per month. The salary for this role is  $70,629-$93,809 DOE

Qualifications


Qualifications:

Required

  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in facilities management, building maintenance, and/or fleet/asset management or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated experience managing contractors and leading facility-related construction or renovation projects.
  • Direct experience implementing, enforcing, and documenting workplace safety protocols in line with Cal/OSHA standards. CalOSHA certification (or ability to obtain it within 90 days of hire).
  • Experience developing formal training materials or operational policies and procedures (PPP).
  • Valid driver's license, clean driving record, and reliable transportation.

Preferred

  • Certification in Facilities Management (e.g., CFM, FMP) or a related technical discipline.
  • Experience working with non-profit organizations or managing facilities that serve the public/community.
  • Proficiency with facility management software (CMMS) or building automation systems (BAS).

Physical Demands: 

Essential functions of the position require the employee to communicate using a telephone, work at a standard computer terminal, and follow reasonable ergonomic recommendations for prolonged postures, including sitting for long periods of time and performing repetitive motions like keyboarding. The role requires significant physical mobility to inspect and maintain facilities, vehicles, and equipment, requiring the employee to stand, walk, climb (ladders, stairs, to access equipment or high areas), balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl (to inspect building systems or confined spaces). The employee must have the strength to reach, lift, push, pull, and carry up to 50 pounds (e.g., tools, equipment, materials) with or without assistance, and be able to move heavier objects using appropriate assistance or equipment. The position involves working both indoors and outdoors, occasionally exposing the employee to moderate noise, dust, and common facility maintenance chemicals (with proper personal protective equipment), and requires sufficient dexterity to operate tools and the sensory ability to identify safety hazards.
