About the Department
Summary Objective
The purpose of this position is to operate wreckers and related equipment.
This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.
Position Duties
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.
Tows illegally parked cars, cars from accident and crime scenes and stolen cars to the Vehicle Impoundment Lot.
Tows damaged or broken-down police vehicles and city equipment.
Changes tires and jump starts or changes batteries to maintain vehicles.
Unlocks locked vehicles.
Answers phones and assists callers in locating their vehicles and maintains tow logs.
Collects impounded vehicle fees.
Releases impounded vehicles to the owners.
Logs impounded vehicles and records license numbers.
Prepares vehicles for auction and tows vehicles to the auction site.
Takes wreckers to shop for repairs.
Performs related work as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
High School Graduation or GED equivalent.
Six (6) months of work experience involving a towing service or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
OTHER MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Must not have been convicted of a felony.
Misdemeanor convictions will be considered on an individual basis.
Must submit to a pre-employment drug screening.
Must submit to a pre-employment polygraph test.
Must submit to fingerprinting for criminal history check.
Applicants who have illegally bought or used marijuana, including medicinal cannabis, within six months of application will be disqualified.
Applicants who have illegally sold marijuana, including medicinal cannabis, within one year of application will be disqualified.
Applicants who have illegally bought, sold, or used any controlled substance or narcotic drug, other than marijuana, without a prescription within six years of application will be disqualified.
Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving history.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.
Performs very heavy work that involves constantly lifting, shoveling, and carrying 50 to 75 pounds on a regular and recurring basis and exerting 100 pounds of force on a frequent basis.
UNAVOIDABLE HAZARDS (WORK ENVIRONMENT)
Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.
