Position Summary

The Department of Emergency Medicine is a dynamic and multifaceted unit encompassing administrative and academic functions, including oversight of the Emergency Medical Services Academy. The Operations Manager plays a pivotal role in managing and coordinating the department’s administrative infrastructure, supporting approximately 115 faculty and 40 staff members.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership & Administration: Provide strategic leadership across staff HR operations, faculty affairs and organizational development. Act as the primary HR liaison overseeing staff employment processes, hiring, onboarding, performance management, and personnel actions.
  • Staff Management & Supervision: Directly supervise departmental staff and student employees, ensuring professional development, performance alignment, and effective work distribution.
  • Fiscal Planning & Budget Oversight: Contribute to and support budget development and fiscal planning efforts, ensuring compliance with university financial policies, adherence to staffing budgets, and long-term financial health of the department.
  • Strategic Initiatives & Compliance: Drive initiatives to improve efficiency and organization, staff analysis and restructuring (as needed).  Ensure department-wide compliance with UNM policies and standards.
  • Facilities & Safety Management: Oversee building operations and security, safety procedures, and infrastructure planning to maintain a secure and efficient working environment.
  • Collaboration & Communication: Act as a collaborative partner across academic and clinical departments. Maintain high-level communication with faculty, staff, and leadership to support departmental goals.

Conditions of Employment

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; at least 2 years of experience managing at least one of the following functional areas: fiscal services, administration and/or human resources AND 3 years of additional experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Proven leadership and supervisory experience in a fast-paced, complex academic or healthcare setting
  • Deep understanding of UNM HR policies, budgeting, strategic planning, and compliance
  • Demonstrated ability to manage diverse teams, prioritize competing tasks, and execute departmental goals effectively
