About the Department
Under general supervision, responsible to take care of infants and pre-school age children; provides guidance to school-aged children during after school and other programs; assists instructors in the supervision of learning activities on the playground and in the classroom.
JOB RELATIONSHIPS:
The preponderance of the duties in this class encompass the care and creation of learning enrichment activities for preschool-age children in care centers and for school-age children during non-school hours. These duties along with duties associated with the care of infants distinguish positions in this class from those performed by employees assigned to positions allocated to other instructional assistant classes.
Position Duties
Provide care to preschool age children and infants. Change diapers; assist children use the toilet; prepare
formula. Hold and provide comfort to infants and children.
Maintain facility in sanitary and orderly condition, cleans after activities and meals, washes bedding and
performs other housekeeping functions as required.
Encourage children to develop abilities by providing guidance and direction.
Assure the health and safety of children by following health and safety practices and regulations.
Maintain safe play conditions and alert teachers and parents regarding unsafe conditions.
Organize activities and supervise children while on the playground.
Observe and record the progress and development of children.
Assist with all meals as needed; brings food to center and prepares for serving.
Perform clerical duties such as filing and copying.
Assist instructors in maintaining a learning environment designed to develop the physical, cognitive, emotional, creative and social skills of children.
Assist in preparation of materials for crafts and other instructional enrichment activities; encourage children's participation in such activities.
Provide information to parents and visitors regarding specific activities in classroom as directed including
contacting parents by phone and on occasion in person.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
One year of part-time paid or volunteer experience working with children. Experience working with infants and preschool children preferred. College course work equivalent to 12 semester units/four courses or specialized training directly related to the duties can be substituted for this experience. In addition to experience, (A) completion of at least 2 years of study at an institution of higher education; or (B) possession of an associate's (or higher) degree; or (C) graduation from high school and passage of a formal state or local academic assessment that demonstrates knowledge and the ability to assist in teaching reading, writing, and mathematics or reading, writing, and mathematics readiness.
