The UVA Library StatLab is seeking a Graduate Student Associate to begin work in the spring 2026 semester.

The StatLab Associate will work with the Library’s full-time statisticians to provide statistical consulting and support to UVA students and faculty across disciplines, write online instructional articles, and contribute to data analysis projects (internal to the Library or in collaboration with other organizations) as they arise.

  • Consultations: Help students and faculty develop research designs, identify appropriate statistical analyses, interpret results, carry out data wrangling, and implement models in supported software environments.
  • Instructional articles: Contribute to StatLab articles, a collection of highly-viewed articles and tutorials explaining common statistical methods, statistical programming, data visualization, and more.
  • Library projects: The Library has increasing needs for data science expertise to analyze its own data, prepare new open-source materials, and collaborate on projects with other groups. StatLab contributes to these projects, and Associates will be brought in as new projects develop.

Associates will be paid hourly at $24/hour for up to 10 hours a week for 15 weeks each semester, with the possibility of project-based work over the summer.

Required Qualifications:

  • Graduate student standing
  • Proficiency in R and a willingness to learn other programs and languages such as Stata, SPSS, or Python
  • Familiarity with a range of statistical methods acquired through at least a year of statistical coursework, and a willingness to learn others
  • Strong oral and written communication skills

To apply, submit an application by November 21, 2025, including a resume and cover letter highlighting:

  • Your experience with data analysis, statistical methods, data wrangling, and data visualization in research projects and/or in classwork
