Position: Long-Term Substitute: Art & French Teacher (.5 Art/.5 French FTE)
Job Summary:
This long-term substitute role involves teaching both Art and French for K-8 students. The Art portion embraces the Teaching for Artistic Behavior (TAB) philosophy, fostering student independence, choice, and artistic exploration. The French portion focuses on developing students’ language skills, cultural understanding, and communication abilities. The ideal candidate will design and implement engaging, student-centered learning experiences in both areas, fostering creativity, critical thinking, and a love of learning.

The Sharon Center School is a K-8 elementary school in rural Northwest Connecticut, part of the Region One School District. Key Responsibilities:
Art (0.5 FTE)
Implement a TAB-based, student-driven art curriculum.
Design and maintain a choice-based art studio.
Provide instruction in a variety of media, techniques, and artistic concepts.
Encourage creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving through the artistic process.
- Organize student artwork for school events and community showcases.
French (0.5 FTE) Teach 5-8 French, developing listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.
Promote cultural awareness and global citizenship.
- Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse needs of learners.
General Responsibilities
Foster a positive, inclusive classroom culture that celebrates student voice and expression.
Collaborate with staff and administration to integrate arts and language across disciplines.
Maintain clear communication with students, families, and colleagues.
Bachelor’s degree in Art Education, French, or a related field.
Valid Connecticut teaching certification with Art and/or World Language endorsement.
Experience teaching Art and/or French at the elementary or middle school level.
Strong collaboration and communication skills.
Ability to complete a background check, including fingerprinting.
Other Requirements:
Physical stamina for Art (standing, lifting up to 25 lbs., crouching/kneeling).
Strong classroom management and ability to maintain structured, inclusive learning environments.
Clear verbal and written communication skills.
Emotional resilience and adaptability in a dynamic school environment.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Art Education, French, or a related field.
