DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: The Behavior Intervention Specialist classification is distinguished by the advanced knowledge of Applied Behavior Analysis, and provides training and support to instructional assistants and school site personnel; one-on-one and/or group intensive behavioral intervention services.

Position Duties

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION: Graduation from an accredited college with a Bachelor's degree in applied behavior analysis, psychology, special education, child development, or a related field. EXPERIENCE: Minimum of two years of experience providing direct services to students with various developmental disabilities, mental health diagnoses and/or severe behavior problems in a home-based, center-based, and/or educational/social services setting. LICENCES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) certification preferred; possession of a valid CPR/First Aid certificate and any other certifications pertaining to this position at time of application and throughout employment. Pass a required pre-employment physical examination. Access to reliable transportation for job-related travel. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: KNOWLEDGE OF: Applied Behavior Analysis Principles Techniques to monitor and support student elopement Analyzing situations to define issues and drawing conclusions; Interpreting written procedures; Writing routine documents and speaking clearly; The characteristics of emotional disturbance, ASD, and intellectual disabilities, specifically what causes individuals with emotional disturbance, ASD, and intellectual disabilities to manifest aggressive behaviors; Child guidance principles and practices related to individuals with emotional disturbance, ASD, and intellectual disabilities; Behavior management techniques, which are evidence-based for emotional disturbance, ASD, and intellectual disabilities; Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA); Effective supervision techniques; Non-violent, verbal and physical crisis intervention techniques; Emergency crisis management techniques; Secondary-level knowledge of subjects taught in District schools; Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary; Record-keeping and report preparation techniques; Personal hygiene practices; Heath and safety regulations; First Aid and CPR; ABILITY TO: Identify behavior problems and their function within the learning environment; Collaborate with the teacher in the development and implementation of behavior plans; Make sound judgments; Quickly adapt to changing situations; Perform tasks with a structured time frame; Provide one-on-one Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) training to designated students; Observe and manage behavior of students according to approved procedures; Monitor and evaluate student progress; Prepare and maintain detailed case records and program notebooks; Maintain confidentiality of sensitive and privileged information; Plan and organize work; Determine appropriate action within clearly defined guidelines; Understand and address the needs of students with various mental health diagnoses, developmental disabilities and severe behavior problems; Conduct training sessions for parents, staff, and other professionals and school site personnel; Conduct weekly on-site visits, participate in school site trainings and meetings in a variety of settings; Read, interpret, and apply rules, regulations and policies; Quickly learn training methods, techniques, and develop materials to be used in instructional and in intensive behavioral intervention; Work independently under broad organizational guidelines to achieve department and District objectives; De-escalate or redirect the student; Effectively use behavior management techniques specific for students with emotional disturbance, ASD, and intellectual disabilities; Assists students with personal care such as dressing and toileting; Effectively utilize training received on the job; Follow safety procedures, and understand and carry out oral and written instructions; Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students and staff; Work as a team; Demonstrate an understanding, patient, warm and receptive attitude toward students with severe needs; Maintain emotional control under difficult situations; Communicate in a clear, concise manner appropriate to the development stage of the student; Communicate effectively orally and in writing; Recognize and effectively assist in responding to emergency and/or hazardous conditions; Administer First Aid and CPR; Collect data in the manner designed by the credentialed staff (teacher, behavior specialist, Program specialist, psychologist, etc.); Document and maintain accurate daily written documentation of specific services performed; Make accurate mathematical calculations; Maintain confidentiality of student records; Perform routine clerical support duties; Operate standard classroom equipment and computers. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Incumbents in this class must be able to see to read small print; speak clearly and hear normal voice conversation; sit, stoop, carry, kneel, and bend; reach over head, and dexterity of hands to grasp and manipulate small objects; use fingers repetitively; stand for long periods; walk long distances, walk quickly for short distances, and keep pace with students; maintain balance; perform lifting, pushing and/or pulling over 50 pounds with assistance; ability to apply appropriate techniques to mitigate the threat of harming self or others which could involved evading, blocking, and restraining; operate office machines and equipment; operate a motor vehicle in a safe and effective manner. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Incumbents in this class work inside and outside, in multiple or single classroom environment; exposure to minor contagious illnesses (colds, flu, etc.); direct contact with students, staff, and public; work around foul odors; work around loud noise; work with exposure to bodily fluids; may be subject to physical and emotional outbursts by students including such behaviors as kicking, spitting, scratching, hitting, biting, or self-injurious behavior.

Minimum Qualifications

BEHAVIOR MANAGEMENT: Applies behavior analysis principles and Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) techniques which are evidence-based for students exhibiting aggressive behaviors due to their emotional disturbance, ASD, or intellectual disabilities; implements supportive interventions designed to complement the student's Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP); monitors, redirects and modifies student progress regarding inappropriate behaviors and performance; provides overseeing, modeling coaching, and shadowing to experienced Instructional Assistants for the purpose for providing resources and training in implementing ABA programs; consults and collaborates with teachers, program specialists and instructional assistant behavioral support personnel to development specific goals and objectives for students; collects and maintains data on student performance necessary to the development of goals and objectives for students; recommends program modifications based on ongoing data for the purpose of the supervision and instruction of students; utilizes skills as an effective communicator and behaviorist to manage minor concerns and to assure consistency among entire staff; assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities; maintains required paperwork including data collection, team communication, therapy hour logs, etc. for the purpose of providing necessary records/materials; assists in facilitating communication between all members of the site team, attend IEP, clinic and other meetings with the school site team; assists with the organization and set up of new classrooms and facilitate acquiring materials and supplies for staff, as needed; assists in the coordination of the Extend School Year program including; applications, interviewing, selecting, and placing ESY classified staff and students. INSTRUCTIONAL/CLASSROOM SUPPORT: Implements Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) in a variety of settings for the purpose of providing appropriate care to students and maintaining an orderly classroom environment; provides supervision regarding student performance, progress, and behavior for the purpose of assisting in evaluation of student's progress and/or implementing student's objective; Facilitates social skills training programs for the purpose of assisting students in training for personal hygiene, taking care of personal needs and developing basic self-sufficiency; consults with classroom teacher in the development of specific goals and objectives for students; Collaborates with teacher to develop and implement behavior plans; collects and maintains data on student performance necessary to the development of goals and objectives for assigned student; implements emergency crisis management techniques.

RECRUITMENT TYPE: OPEN - Anyone can apply. CERTIFICATION TYPE: DUAL CERTIFICATION - Qualified candidates, or Eligibles, who pass all testing stages will be placed onto one eligibility list. Current employees will receive additional preference points based on longevity before placement on the list. The top 3 ranks of Eligibles will be certified for a hiring interview. SCREENING PROCESS: The screening process for this position, which may be subject to modification, will include some form of a(n): application screening, initial qualifications screening, documentation/certification screening, and supplemental application screening. EXAMINATION PROCESS: The examination may consist of any combination of a(n): training and experience (T&E) evaluation, written knowledge test, hands on/performance test, structured panel interview, situational judgement interview, or other type of exam of fitness for duty. All parts of the examination process are job related. A passing score must be attained on each portion of the exam to advance to the next stage and ultimate placement on an eligibility list. ESTABLISHMENT OF ELIGIBILITY: Candidates who are successful in all screening and testing stages will be placed on an eligibility list. Typically, an eligibility list for a classification expires after six (6) months or one (1) year. Candidates on the expired eligibility list are no longer considered for positions within the class. Eligibility lists may be extended beyond one year or expire sooner than one year. Eligibility lists may be merged, in which case candidate ranks may change. SELECTION PROCESS: Candidates on the eligibility list will be called in rank order to participate in final selection interviews with the hiring manager until three ranks of candidates have accepted the invitation to interview. Ranks may include ties so more than three candidates may be called to interview for one vacancy. Please note that candidates will be removed from the eligibility list for declining the invitation to interview more than three (3) times. ADVANCED STEP PLACEMENT: All new regular classified employees shall be paid in accordance with the salary range established for the class to which assigned. Initial placement will normally be the first step of the salary range. However, a new employee may be provided with advanced step placement upon recommendation of the hiring manager and approval by Human Resources based upon: A) Additional qualifying experience beyond that required for entry into the class. B) Additional education at the college level when related to the position, beyond the established educational requirements for entry into the class. C) Difficulty experienced in the recruitment of candidates to meet the vacancy needs in the class. D) Additional skills or qualifications of the candidate that make them especially qualified for the position. E) Evidence of currently receiving a salary greater than the first step of the salary for the classification.
