About the Department

The Public Information Representative performs professional level work involved in assisting with the planning of communications activities of a department, agency, or service of the Metropolitan Government. The incumbent will perform related duties as required.

Waste Services is responsible for weekly curbside waste and every other week curbside recycling collection for over 151,000 customers in the urban services district as well as collection of over 200 public litter baskets in the downtown Nashville corridor. The division also operates four convenience centers where residents of Davidson County can bring waste, recycling, bulk items, food waste, household hazardous waste, and other items for recycling or disposal and eight recycling drop-off locations available to residents who do not qualify for curbside recycling collection.

Waste Services currently employs staff members working in collection, administration, customer service, education, landfill engineering, development review, and outreach.


Position Duties

  • Helps prepare and distribute press releases, media advisories, and public notices to external audiences as assigned.

  • Supports the development and dissemination of internal communications (such as newsletters, announcements, and policy updates) to department staff under the direction of the primary communications lead.

  • Assists with coordinating responses to public inquiries, media requests, and open records requests, ensuring accuracy and consistency in messaging.

  • Maintains and updates department website content and social media platforms, ensuring timely and accurate information under supervision.

  • Contributes to the planning and execution of communication campaigns for department initiatives, programs, or emergency situations.

  • Monitors communication channels and reports relevant feedback or public sentiment to the primary communications lead.

  • Assists with maintaining contact databases, tracking communication projects, and supporting administrative tasks related to communications activities.

  • Participates in the development or amendment of department rules, policies, and procedures as they relate to communications and media relations.

  • Maintains liaison with administrative and communications personnel in other departments to facilitate efficient operations.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university and two (2) years experience disseminating information and/or planning public relations/communications activities.

LICENSES REQUIRED

Valid Drivers License

Note: Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.

  • Experience with proofreading and editing material
  • Skilled in developing contacts in the media
