The primary function of the Young 5’s Teacher is to provide young children with learning foundations in basic subjects like learning letters and numbers; help begin the learning process through group reading and various activities.
Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education, including all courses needed to meet and maintain credential requirements.
A valid, State of Michigan Teaching Certificate, with appropriate Early Childhood, Pre K-K endorsements.
Successful classroom teaching experience in a pre-k setting preferred.
Knowledge of principles, theories, methods, techniques, and strategies pertaining to teaching and instruction of children age 5;
Knowledge of child growth and development and behavior characteristics of pre-k children;
A minimum of the completion of all student teaching required for the appropriate teaching credential;
Educational curriculum and instructional goals and objectives, and the educational trends and research findings pertaining to student educational programming;
Behavior management and behavior shaping strategies, techniques and methods, and conflict resolution procedures;
Socio-economic and cultural background differences of the general school population;
Appearance, grooming and personality that establish a positive example for students. Better than average recommendations from student teaching supervisor or other professionals who have observed the personal characteristics, scholastic achievement, and classroom performance of the teacher;
Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general education periodicals, professional journals, teaching procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write business correspondence and syllabi. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of directors, students, parents, and the general public;
Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve routine problems with minimal supervisory assistance. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, with staff and with the community. Ability to perform duties with awareness and consistency to the mission and goals established by the Board of Education;

Report to/Evaluated by: The Young 5’s teacher is under the immediate supervision of the site Principal.
Supervisory Responsibility: This position may supervise student teachers, volunteers, student aides, and instructional assistants. All school employees have some responsibility for supervising students and assisting in maintaining a safe environment at all times.
Salary Range: $46,000-$85,000; Salary dependent upon education level and experience per Appendix B of the BTEA contract.
Prepare daily lessons and exercises;
Follow age-appropriate curriculum guidelines for Young 5’s such as counting single digit numbers, number recognition, simple addition and subtraction, basic fractions, measurement and problem solving, identifying colors, categorizing and grouping shapes, and memorizing the alphabet, letter recognition, phonics and phonemic awareness, social skills;
Help students understand the benefits of personal health habits, including eating nutritional snacks, washing hands, grooming and dressing;
Arrange seating plans, take roll, keep attendance records and implementa school procedures;
Organize and lead games, arts and crafts, and other activities designed to help students learn, expend energy, and work in groups;
Select supplies, such as arts and crafts, story books, and other learning tools; keep supplies organized; assist students in gathering and returning supplies before and after activities;
Read stories from age-appropriate books and encourage students to interact through creative feedback in group discussions;
Help students integrate with one another and interact in groups, whether they’re working on curriculum, completing tasks, or during play activities;
Identify emotional problems and address them with the child’s parents or guardians during parent-teacher conferences;
Attend staff meetings and work with colleagues to plan curriculum and discuss student progress;
Work with school staff, such as counselors, nurses, and psychologists, who specialize in early childhood development and behavior management issues;
Supervise paraprofessionals or volunteers as appropriate and in accordance with school procedures and policies as well as state and federal equal employment guidelines;
Identify children with potential special needs and develop Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) for remedial attention if necessary;
Grade students on assignments and evaluate work; keep student records and provide parents or guardians with timely progress reports;
Administer tests and formal assessments; evaluate students’ grade-level performance in accordance with school and district policies;
Communicates with parents through a variety of means. Holds parent conferences when needed to discuss the individual student progress and interpret the school program;
Participates cooperatively with the principal or his/her designee in the evaluation system by which the teacher will be evaluated in conformance with district/state guidelines for evaluation;
Maintain appropriate licenses and training hours as required;
Comply with applicable District, state, local and federal laws, rules and regulations;
Takes in-service training as provided;
Must be self-directed and have the ability to follow directives from supervisors;
Must maintain confidentiality at all times;
Regular in-person attendance and punctuality are expectations of this position.
