The maintenance mechanic maintains production and quality of SME’s equipment, machinery and facility by conducting troubleshooting, repairs and preventive maintenance services. Their services may be emergency/unscheduled repairs during production and/or may be scheduled maintenance or repairs of production equipment during off hours. The maintenance mechanic’s skills may include, but may not be limited to, mechanical, electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic troubleshooting and repair of production line equipment, overhead cranes, forklifts, welding equipment, packaging and miscellaneous machinery. They are able to read and interpret work orders to perform required maintenance and service and may refer to equipment manuals as necessary.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES: The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
- Ensures operation of machinery and mechanical equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements on engines, motors, pneumatic tools, conveyor systems, and production machines; by following diagrams, sketches, operations manuals, manufacturer's instructions, and engineering specifications; and by troubleshooting malfunctions.
- Performs P/M's on all types of Equipment.
- Monitors performance of all equipment and minimizes unscheduled down time.
- Locates sources of problems by observing mechanical devices in operation; listening for problems; using precision measuring and testing instruments.
- Removes defective parts by dismantling devices; using hoists, cranes, and hand and power tools; examining form and texture of parts.
- Determines changes in dimensional requirements of parts by inspecting used parts; using rules, calipers, micrometers, and other measuring instruments and adjusts parts and control instruments by using hand tools and measuring devices.
- Maintains equipment, parts, and supply inventories by periodically checking stock to determine inventory level; anticipates needed equipment, parts, and supplies when possible; and places and expedites orders when needed; verifies receipt of ordered items.
- Applies advanced working knowledge and experience to independently improve maintenance techniques and operations.
- Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations. A mechanic or technician must comply specifically with all OSHA safety and health rules.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- Prefer High School diploma, GED or equivalent, and 1 - 3 years of previous maintenance experience.
- Must be dependable, reliable, and mature enough to handle equipment in a safe and sensible manner.
- Ability to work for extended hours in a physically challenging environment. Must be physically fit.
- Sound technical skills and an aptitude to diagnosis mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and electronic systems and circuitry.
- Able to read, understand and use concepts from mechanical, hydraulic, electrical drawings, schematics and maintenance manuals.
- Ability to communicate verbally and in writing, if necessary, with co-workers maintenance supervisory personnel, production supervisors, and inspectors.
- TECHNICAL SKILLS
- Advanced knowledge of industrial machinery operation.
- Advanced knowledge of bearings, gears, drives, power transmission, metal fabrication, tool room machining, and heat treatment of components.
- Knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic equipment and systems.
- Proven mechanical and trouble shooting skills.
