The access services library specialist provides excellent customer service to the students, faculty, and community using the library during the weekends during the fall and spring semesters. The person in this position will assist users by answering general inquiries, help reserve study rooms, and check out library materials, including books, course reserves, and laptops.
The specialist works Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. late August – early December; mid-January – mid May). During the last week of the semester (mid-December in the fall and early May in the spring), the library specialist’s schedule shifts to accommodate extended operation hours during finals week. The library specialist reports to the Manager, Library Operations, Access Services.
Responsibilities
- Assists library users at the central library service desk by answering general inquiries and helping locate course reserves books, headphones, and laptops to check out. Assists researchers with finding preliminary, suitable information resources. Helps library users reserve study rooms. Checks in and re-shelves returned items.
- Refers library users to research and instruction or student technology center or other services by providing contact information and hours of service.
- Provides general information about university services.
- Assures library users are observing library guidelines and observing quiet study zones.
- Assists in re-shelving loaned materials, tidies collections, assists with shelf reading and shelf maintenance projects.
- Assists with proper library closing procedures each evening.
- Maintains technical proficiency in library and university software.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications: High school degree and four years excellent customer service; equivalent education may substitute for required work experience
Preferred qualifications: library experience, experience with Integrated Library Systems (ILS) - fulfillment; ability to troubleshoot; familiarity with Library of Congress Classification and Dewey Decimal system; desire to assist student researchers
