Job Summary:
Mercury Systems is seeking a Director of Mechanical Engineering to lead the Structures and Systems organization across multiple sites. This role oversees a matrixed team responsible for designing, developing, and integrating mechanical subsystems—including chassis, structures, cabling, and electronics packaging—for mission-critical aerospace and defense applications. The Director will drive innovation, standardize best practices, ensure compliance with industry and regulatory standards, and align engineering efforts with business and customer needs. This position requires strong technical expertise, proven leadership in a multi-site environment, and the ability to balance strategic direction with hands-on technical oversight.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide strategic leadership, direction, and resource planning for multi-site Mechanical Engineering teams.
- Oversee the design, development, verification, and integration of mechanical subsystems to meet demanding performance, environmental, and customer requirements.
- Standardize and implement engineering best practices, processes, design guidelines, and checklists to improve efficiency and reduce development costs.
- Partner with peer functional leaders, program management, and operations to ensure alignment on project execution, schedules, budgets, and risk management.
- Drive design for manufacturability (DFM), assembly (DFA), and test (DFT) improvements, supporting production and resolving manufacturing or field issues.
- Ensure engineering activities comply with industry standards, military specifications, regulatory requirements, and company policies.
- Act as a technical liaison across customers, program management, and manufacturing/operations to resolve issues and drive technical excellence.
- Mentor and develop engineering leaders and staff, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Maintain and track performance metrics, supporting accurate bids and proposals, and ensuring delivery against commitments.
- Lead technical investigations, including customer support and hardware process improvement initiatives.
- Drive technology advancement and integration of cutting-edge solutions into product designs.
Required Qualifications:
- BS in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
- 10+ years of experience in mechanical/hardware design and development.
- 3+ years in a leadership role managing multiple teams, including other managers.
- Expertise in mechanical design processes (solid modeling, thermal/structural analysis, GD&T, materials, environmental qualification, subsystem integration).
- Program/product experience with aerospace and defense, including requirements verification, design reviews, and customer specifications.
- Experience mentoring engineers and developing future leaders.
- U.S. citizenship with the ability to obtain a government security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
- Experience with high-reliability aerospace, defense, or space applications.
- Knowledge of military electrical/environmental standards (MIL-STD-704, 461, 1275, 1399, 464, DO-160).
- Familiarity with JAMA, JIRA, Confluence, and VITA design standards (VITA 42, 46, 48, 62, 65).
- Space application experience.
