Who We Are
Founded in 1999, Maryland Coalition of Families (MCF) is a statewide nonprofit with a central office in Columbia, Md., and staff located in communities throughout the state. Using personal experience as parents, caregivers, youth and other loved ones, we connect, support and empower Maryland’s families. Our staff provide one-to-one support to parents and caregivers of young people with mental health issues and to any loved one who cares for someone with a substance use or gambling issue. We also advocate to improve systems that impact individuals with behavioral health challenges.
Overview
MCF has an employment opportunity for a Full-time Youth Peer Support (Problem Gambling) Specialist living in Maryland.
The Peer Support Specialist-Youth & Young Adult will provide peer support to youth and young adults with or at risk for developing problem gambling disorders. This position will also conduct outreach to schools and colleges to educate peers and raise awareness of risks associated with gaming and other activities that can lead to problem gambling disorder. They will also support the Problem Gambling Program Coordinator to design, develop, and execute educational workshops for youth, young adults, and parents/caregivers.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Delivers peer support to youth and young adults impacted by problem gambling, including emotional support, education, systems navigation and resource connection.
- Connects youth and young adults to counseling, peer support groups, and financial literacy education programs and provides follow-up to ensure engagement.
- Supports the Coordinator for the Problem Gambling Program to conduct interactive workshops, trainings, and presentations in schools, colleges, and community centers on topics related to problem gambling awareness, risk factors, protective factors, and emerging trends.
- Works with Coordinator for the Problem Gambling Program to collaborate with local ATOD at Maryland colleges to provide education during integrated community events highlighting the intersection of gambling with substance use risks.
- Speaks on panels about lived experience; modeling appropriate, safe, and effective ways to share stories.
- Serves on committees and supports other young people to serve on committees representing the young adult perspective in order to impact and improve youth-serving systems.

Requirements
Qualifications
- Lived experience as a person with problem gambling challenges.
- Lived experience accessing mental health/behavioral health services is preferred.
- Must live in Maryland
- Comfort with public speaking and willingness to share personal story to help others.
- Experience with social media.
- Ability to join youth advocacy boards and committee to bring youth and young adult voice.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including nights and/or weekends as needed.
- Proven record of workplace reliability and professionalism.
- Ability to work with youth and young adults from diverse cultural, religious, racial and economic backgrounds, as well as LGBTQ youth and young adults.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to work independently, manage priorities, and communicate effectively with a remote supervisor.
- Ability to create and maintain positive and professional relationships with partners.
- Current Maryland driver’s license and access to own vehicle; in-state travel required for various meetings/events across the state and to the MCF office in Columbia.
- Successful completion of a background check is required for all MCF employees.
Hours/Compensation
- Full-Time/40 hours per week.
- Flexible work schedule.
- Salary: $18-$20 per hour
- MCF provides equipment, mileage reimbursement, and paid training.
