SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
The Central Sterilization Technician is responsible for cleaning, assembling, and sterilizing all equipment, supplies and/or instruments. The Central Sterilization Technician is responsible for helping to maintain the supplies inventory.
RESPONSIBILITIES- Cleans and decontaminates patient use items by taking apart instruments, rinsing, and soaking instruments and using washing/sterilization equipment.
- Assembles, packages and/or terminally sterilizes patient use items.
- Keeps required records such as biological testing and unit checks.
- Performs required environmental and/or equipment maintenance procedures.
- Strictly adheres to the Surgery Center’s policies and procedures relating to infection control and safety.
- Participates in committees as assigned.
- Performs other duties as needs arise.
QUALIFICATIONS- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Must hold and maintain CST certification and follow AAMI guidelines.
- One-year previous sterilization experience preferred,
- Must be able to adapt to repetitive, short cycle operations.
- Must be able to organize and prioritize work.
- Must have some mechanical ability to operate large equipment, disassemble and assemble instruments, and have some familiarity with surgical instrumentation.
- Mental and physical health sufficient to meet the demands of the position.
ENVIRONMENTAL/WORKING CONDITIONS- Surgery center setting.
- Well-lighted, well-ventilated, adequate space.
- Some exposure to communicable diseases and/or other conditions common to a clinical setting.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS
- Requires sitting, standing, bending, and reaching 6-8 hours of the day.
- Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Intermittent physical mobility/activity including walking, standing, sitting, light lifting, pulling, and pushing of carts, equipment, etc. Must be able to bend body downward at the waist; be able to kneel.
