Harbor’s Edge is a premier 5-star, resort-style Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) located alongside the beautiful harbor in Norfolk, Virginia. Our community consists of 300 Independent Living Residential Units, a 33-bed (Medicare/private) Skilled Nursing Healthcare Unit, a 40-bed Assisted Living Unit, and 34-bed Memory Support Unit.

We are seeking a full-time, compassionate, highly qualified Fitness Specialist to join our Activities team to help deliver excellent wellness programs, with the goal of maintaining our residents at their maximum potential level of functioning. The Specialist will instruct and encourage residents and employees in exercise classes, fitness centers, and one-on-one exercises. The ideal candidate will have previous senior living clinic experience (e.g., long-term care, assisted living, memory support) with a passion for working with an elderly population.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist in developing and providing wellness and fitness instruction for residents in a fun, safe, energizing manner, ensuring adherence to any restriction or limitation requirements.
  • Promote programs and encourage regular attendance. Maintain a record of activities and attendance.
  • Properly maintain fitness equipment, materials, and facilities. Assist in keeping rooms in proper order and properly cleaned.
  • Coordinate effectively with other staff members regarding use of facilities.
  • Assist in preparation of monthly Community newsletter as well as assist with the planning, organizing, and functioning of various resident events.
  • Attend in-service classes and staff meetings as directed. 
  • Maintain various fitness certifications through training.

Requirements

REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Adult CPR, First Aid, AED certification.
  • National certification such as ACSM, NSCA, AFFA, ACE strongly preferred.
  • Silver Sneakers, Chair One, or similar fitness certification strongly preferred.
  • At least one (1) year of experience in the fitness industry, preferably with seniors and/or special needs population.
  • Ability to work effectively with special needs residents such as those in Healthcare, Assisted Living, and Memory Support.
  • Excellent communication and active listening skills, skills, verbal and written comprehension, reading skills, with ability to follow and deliver both written and verbal instructions effectively. Strong documentation skills.
  • Ability to manage priorities and workflow effectively. Versatility, flexibility, and willingness to work within constantly changing priorities with understanding and enthusiasm.
  • Utilize good judgment with ability to make timely and sound decisions.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with the elderly population, healthcare providers, staff, families, management team in a respectful, compassionate, and patient manner, and consistently show flexibility, adaptability, patience, compassion, and effective interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to always perform duties with consideration for residents’ rights and demonstrate integrity and discretion in the care of the residents and in handling their health information.
  • Excellent computer and documentation skills.
  • Expected to report to work on time and work the fully established schedule. Must be willing to work, when necessary, beyond normal working hours and on weekends, as well as in other positions, as necessary.
  • Must be able to sit, stand for extended periods of time, stationary positions at certain times during the workday, walk, move, ascend/descend stairs, reach, turn, bend, stoop, crouch, kneel, reach overhead, grasp with both hands, maintain balance and body equilibrium to prevent falls, fine manipulation, coordination, and repetitive motion. 
  • Able to frequently exert up to 50 lbs. (unassisted) and/or lift up to 25 lbs. (unassisted) to physically move objects, with ability to help carry, transfer, push, and pull, and reposition residents with assistance or by using appropriate equipment.
