JOB SUMMARY

A Community Aide - Parts Driver position with the Fleet Division in the Department of General Services (DGS), Baltimore City, typically involves transporting automotive parts, supplies, and equipment to and from various locations to support fleet maintenance and repair operations. Below is a general job description

The Parts Driver is responsible for the timely and efficient delivery and pickup of automotive parts, tools, and supplies necessary for the maintenance and repair of the city’s fleet vehicles. The role requires strong time management skills, attention to detail, and the ability to navigate Baltimore City and surrounding areas effectively.

  • Pick up and deliver automotive parts, tools, and supplies to and from fleet maintenance shops, vendors, and other city departments.
  • Maintain accurate records of deliveries, invoices, and receipts.
  • Ensure the safe and secure transportation of parts, preventing damage or loss.
  • Perform basic inspections on the delivery vehicle, such as checking fluid levels, tire pressure, and overall condition.
  • Keep the vehicle clean and report any maintenance or repair needs to supervisors.
  • Assist with inventory management by organizing parts and supplies in the warehouse or stockroom.
  • Communicate effectively with fleet technicians, supervisors, and vendors to coordinate deliveries.
  • Follow all safety and traffic regulations while operating city vehicles.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION

  • Primarily operates a city-owned vehicle for deliveries.
  • Some work in warehouse or fleet maintenance facilities.
  • May be exposed to varying weather conditions while making deliveries.
  • Verify incoming shipments for quality, accuracy and quantity.   
  • Bar codes and inputs stock information into computer system  
  • Stores parts in designated areas 
  • Rotates stock as required and maintains orderly storeroom.
  • Issues parts and materials, packs and unpacks parts, maintains records for MSDS book.  
  • Prepares parts for vendor return and auction.
  • Performs inventory counts.
  • Performs general housekeeping duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

On or before the date of filing the application, each candidate must:

EDUCATION: Have a high school diploma or GED preferred.

AND

EXPERIENCE: Have years of experience in delivery driving, automotive parts handling, or a related field is a plus.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATES:

Have a valid Maryland class C Noncommercial driver's license or an equivalent driver's license and eligible to obtain a Baltimore City driver’s permit with a clean driving record.

PROVISIONAL DRIVER’S LICENSE ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of receiving, storing and shipping procedures of automotive parts and materials.
  • Ability to operate material handling equipment.
  • Possess basic organizational and computer skills. 
  • Knowledge of Baltimore City streets and surrounding areas.

  • Ability to lift and carry automotive parts weighing up to 50 lbs.

  • Basic understanding of vehicle maintenance and parts terminology preferred.

  • Strong organizational and time management skills.

  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Background Check

Eligible candidates under final consideration for appointment to positions identified as positions of trust will be required to complete authorization for a Criminal Background Check and/or Fingerprint screening and must be successfully completed.

Probation

All persons, including current City employees, selected for this position must complete a 6-month mandatory probation.
