Job Goals:

The primary goals of the Assistant Supervisor are to:

• On behalf of the VBISD, oversee a safe and a high quality bus program for Lawrence Public Schools
• Coordinate the VBISD Bus Training Program that provides initial training, remedial training, safety, programs for school bus drivers as required by the State of Michigan

Qualifications:

Education:

High School Diploma or the equivalency

Certification:

• Valid Commercial Driver's License
• Train the Trainer Certification Michigan Association of Pupil Transportation

Work Experience:

• Minimum of 3 years experience driving a school bus
• Experience in the provision of bus driving training
• Experience in supervising staff is preferred
• Experience scheduling vehicles for a transportation system is preferred 

Skills:

• Thorough understanding of the principles and practices involved in school bus operation
• Experience with local geography and traffic conditions
• Expertise in assessing risk conditions, training and coaching staff 
• Ability to schedule and supervise the work of others
• Ability to drive a school bus route
• Ability to prepare reports, manage databases and present information to groups of people
• Ability to work effectively with others including staff, community agencies, and the public
• Ability to effectively use computer applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, calendar, e-mail and database software
• Demonstrates reliability, dependability, and physical abilities to perform the duties of the position 

• Possess expertise in problem solving, conflict resolution and mediation
• Willingness to seek and accept performance feedback  

Essential Job Functions:

• Hires, trains and supervises drivers for Lawrence Public School transportation
• Determines routes, time schedules, student eligibility, and authorizes bus stops for Lawrence Public Schools in accordance with the District policy
• Drives school bus routes in cases of a staff shortage or emergencies
• Communicates regularly with Lawrence Public schools, parents, and staff 
• Prepares state transportation reports, daily records, staff time records, cost, and maintenance records
• Regularly views security camera video to ensure safe student and bus driver behavior
• Works with Supervisor to manage conflict or issues, and to determine disciplinary procedures, as needed 
• Coordinates and provides training and safety classes for bus drivers and bus attendants
• Demonstrates regular and reliable, in-person attendance
• Valid driver's license required.
