Assistant Professor of Engineering
ABOUT THIS POSITION
Summary: The Department of Computer Science and Engineering(CS&E) at Colorado Mesa University invites applications for an AssistantProfessor of Engineering starting August 2026. This CMU faculty role is a full-time,tenure-track position in Grand Junction, CO, primarily focusing on teachinglower-division mechanical engineering courses in support of the EngineeringPartnership Program (EPP) between Colorado Mesa University (CMU) and theUniversity of Colorado Boulder (CU Boulder), as well as supporting CMU’s standaloneMechanical Engineering Technology program.
In addition to teaching,tenure-track faculty are expected to:
- Maintain an active scholarly agenda (e.g.,applied research, engineering education, or discipline-relevant scholarship)
- Contribute to service and student advising/mentoring within the department,university, and profession.

In 2008, CMU partnered with CU Boulder to form the CMU/CUBoulder Engineering Partnership Program (EPP), enabling students to earn a CUBoulder degree in Civil, Electrical & Computer, or Mechanical Engineeringentirely on the CMU campus in Grand Junction. Students benefit from smallclasses, hands-on learning, and faculty focused on undergraduate teaching.Instruction is provided by CMU faculty in lower-division courses, while theupper-division courses are covered by CU Boulder faculty dedicated to the EPPwho live and teach in Grand Junction. This creates an affordable, rigorousprogram combining CMU’s teaching focus with CU Boulder’s engineeringexcellence. Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer at the time of hire. CMU is not able to provide H-1B sponsorship (new, transfer, or extension) for this position.
Minimum Required Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in mechanical engineering or a closely related field from a regionally accredited institution and 5+ years of relevant engineering work experience.
- Readiness to teach lower-division engineering courses that support the EPP.
- Active-learning mindset with the ability to engage students in hands-on, student-centered classrooms.
- Demonstrated enthusiasm for teaching and student success.
- Commitment to best practices in instruction, advising/mentoring, and curriculum development.
- Record of, or clear plan for, scholarly work (e.g., applied research, engineering education, or discipline-relevant scholarship).
- Service orientation with potential for meaningful participation in institutional, community, and/or professional activities.
- Strong communication and organization skills, modeling dignity, humility, and curiosity in daily practice.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in mechanical engineering or a closely related field from a regionally accredited institution.
- Professional engineering experience and/or prior college teaching.
- Experience with active learning, project-based instruction, or hands-on labs that build students’ confidence and capability.
- History of supporting diverse learners and creating welcoming learning environments.
- Evidence of dedication to undergraduate teaching and mentoring, aligned with CMU’s mission and values.
- Demonstrated ability to work with programmable devices.
- Ability to teach lower-division courses across multiple engineering disciplines.
