Job Description:  In-School Suspension Supervisor

 

Position Summary:

The ISS Supervisor manages the in-school suspension room to ensure a structured, disciplined environment that supports academic accountability and behavioral correction. The supervisor works with students who have been assigned to ISS for behavioral infractions, helping them complete classwork while enforcing school rules and maintaining order.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate’s degree or higher preferred.
  • New Mexico Public Education Department Education Assistant License
  • Experience working with adolescents in an educational or behavioral setting preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Understanding of adolescent development and positive behavior strategies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and monitor students assigned to ISS throughout the school day.
  • Maintain a quiet, orderly environment conducive to academic work.
  • Ensure students follow all ISS rules and complete required assignments.
  • Communicate with teachers to collect student work and ensure it is returned when completed.
  • Provide behavioral guidance and model appropriate conduct.
  • Record attendance and disciplinary notes as required by school administration.
  • Escort students to and from the ISS room as necessary.
  • Maintain a safe environment, intervening in disruptive behavior when appropriate.
  • Report serious infractions or safety concerns to the school administrator immediately.
  • Enforce school policies and procedures fairly and consistently.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to stand or walk for extended periods (up to 4–6 hours daily).
  • Must be able to sit for prolonged periods while monitoring students.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 25 pounds (e.g., instructional materials, equipment).
  • Must be able to bend, stoop, reach, and assist students in need.
  • Must have the ability to move quickly in emergency situations.
  • Visual and auditory acuity required to effectively supervise students and respond to safety issues.

 

Work Environment:

  • Majority of work performed indoors in a school/classroom environment.
  • May be exposed to difficult student behaviors, emotional outbursts, or conflict situations.
  • May require flexible hours depending on school schedule and assignments.
