About the Role:

Job Summary

The surgical technologist educator provides initial and ongoing education for surgical technologists across the system within the operating room setting. The ST educator demonstrates expertise in staff education, surgical technologist practice, patient care delivery, evidence-based practice and collaborates with other disciplines in professional development activities. This position demonstrates understanding of department-level structure and differences of processes across departments in the same setting. They can function in a scrub role and other duties assigned by under the direction of a registered nurse. Employee performs clinical duties in accordance with specific guidelines and adheres to National Patient Safety Goals as outlines in policy and procedures. This position will care for patients from infant to geriatric age groups. The ST educator will collaborate with other educators within surgical services to provide advancement of the professional practice environment. They will assist with overall clinical governance and other projects as assigned.

Minimum Job Qualifications

  • Licensure or other certifications: Current CST or TS-C certification.

  • Educational Requirements: High school graduate or certified equivalent; Graduate of a formal surgical technology program.     

  • Minimum Experience: Minimum of three (3) years of clinical experience in an acute care setting and experience teaching or precepting surgical technologists.

  • Preferred Licensure or other certifications: NBSTSA or NCCT.

  • Demonstrates effective time management by completing patient case assignments with appropriate turnover average

Essential Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Functions as scrub person in the Operating Rooms and assumes other duties as assigned. Sets up cases with proper instrumentation and supplies prior to start of case. Follows hospital policy for hand asepsis. Demonstrates competency as a certified scrub technologist. Performs accurate sponge, needle, and instrument counts with RN circulator adhering to hospital policy. Maintains organized sterile field ensuring instrumentation is kept free from bioburden & instruments returned to correct trays in a safe manner to prevent damage or injury. Accurately prepares specimens and communicates with the registered nurse.   • Monitors and maintains integrity of sterile field. Assists in room monitoring of equipment, temperature, and humidity notifying circulating nurse to escalate the issue if indicated. Ensures proper patient body alignment during intra-operative phase by position monitoring checks e.g., feet, arms, etc. Precepts new staff as assigned and demonstrates sound clinical & positive interpersonal skills. Adheres to infection control practices. Demonstrates knowledge of safety policies and procedures.

  • Contributes to productivity of the department by demonstrating effective time management. Expedites safe, rapid turnover of cases assisting with clean up and set up of new case. Accurately reports supplies used to ensure proper charging. 

  • Contributes to the overall efficiency of the OR by performing routine tasks. Performs special assignments. Assists with general daily cleanup of rooms, workroom, and central core.

  • Guides students and staff in the development and implementation of surgical technology.

  • Perform and make assessments of students and new hires.

  • Monitors shift personnel for compliance with established unit routines

  • Addresses shift problems/concerns and reports interventions to Nurse Manager quickly and accurately.

  • Utilizes clinical expertise in assisting students and/or orientees with difficult or unusual procedures.

  • Participates in staff development programs frequently, which includes infection control information.

  • Assist with orientation of new scrub personnel; instructing and supervising delivery of care as required.

  • Provides impromptu instruction and demonstration of techniques, products and procedures.

  • Successfully completes mentoring class.

  • Assists in leading, planning or participating in staff meetings.

  • Seeks opportunities to present outside of the organization.
