Hourly Position, Non-Exempt, Full Time (30 hours per week)
Position Overview & General Responsibilities
The primary responsibility of the Chaplain is to meet the spiritual needs of residents. The Chaplain designs, directs and implements a program of religious activities and services to carry out the mission and ministry of Summit Square while meeting the spiritual and emotional needs of residents. Maintains relationships with local churches and chaplains, assisting residents in maintaining church relationships and facilitating communications with the faith community is essential to this position
- Provide pastoral care for residents, including all aspects of religious programs for all levels of living, maintaining confidentiality as required and demonstrating sensitivity to the needs of residents, staff and families concerning spiritual, emotional, mental and physical concerns.
- Facilitate and direct resident based on their spiritual interests and concerns.
- Develop and maintain relationships with residents, family members and staff based upon trust, dignity and respect.
- Establish and maintain open communication and positive work relationships with all departments of Summit Square.
- Support clinical staff with psycho-social and spiritual assessment.
- Attends necessary meetings related to resident needs.
- Engages in a positive manner in dealing with all outside agencies, churches and religious institutions.
- Make routine visits and phone calls to hospital ensuring pastoral services are provided.
- Provide consultation to bereaved residents and their family members in a timely fashion.
- Offer assistance, as able, in planning resident memorial services
- Build relationships with area pastors and religious leaders to facilitate resident’s long-term church membership/commitment when appropriate.
- Prepare and manage weekly religious programming and Vesper services for residents.
- Plan and implement weekly bible studies and devotions.
- Prepare all materials necessary for services, devotions, studies, and programs (bulletins, programs, and communications). Work with Life Enrichment Coordinator to ensure timely and proper communication of upcoming religious events.
- Represent (Summit Square) in surrounding community, at area churches and places of worship.
- Visits new residents upon arrival and maintains routine visits with current residents in all levels of living.
- Offer appropriate prayers and blessings for meetings and assemblies when requested. Facilitate the participation of other staff or residents in observances and prayers as appropriate to include those who wish to take an active role in such activities.
- Maintain professional interactions where words and behaviors remain consistent with the mission of the organization and with the ministry of pastoral care.
- Adhere to all company policies and procedures. Attend all in-services, training and meetings as required by company policies and Federal/State Regulations.
- Demonstrate a commitment to safety by following safety rules and guidelines; follow good housekeeping practices, take proper care of equipment and perform job duties and responsibilities in a safe and responsible manner. Uses chemicals safely and appropriately.
- Demonstrate dependability, reliability and punctuality. Report to work when schedule, ready to work.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) through the Association of Professional Chaplains, Bachelor’s Degree in a Human Services related field, and/or pastoral care experience preferred.
- Ecumenical perspective and the ability to work well with people of all faiths.
- Ability to communicate effectively and compassionately with older population with varying mental and physical capabilities.
- Ability to work with confidential information and maintain its’ integrity is required.
- Ability to act with discretion and sensitivity is required
- Experience in a long-term care, hospice or home health environment is preferred
- Strong verbal/written communication and computer skills.
- Valid Virginia driver’s license and meets driver eligibility requirements per Sunnyside Communities policy.
- Ability to obtain and maintain First Aid and CPR certifications required.
- Able to work independently to manage schedule in order to meet residents’ pastoral needs.
- Creative, positive, energetic, organized and patient.
- Customer service skills; maintain a hospitality approach when engaging all individuals.
Physical & Environmental Considerations:
Work Environment: General office environment with normal lighting levels, temperature ranges, air quality, ventilation and noise levels. Work Schedule: 30 hrs per week. Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee will routinely sit, stand, reach, lift, bend, kneel, stoop, climb, push and pull items weighing 50 lbs. The position requires manual dexterity; auditory and visual skills; and the ability to follow written and oral instructions and procedures. Work Hazards: Minimal hazards commensurate with general office conditions.
