About the Department

The County of Yolo is recruiting to fill one (1) full-time position in the class of 
Assistant Planner, Associate Planner or Senior Planner at the Department of Community Services. 
This is a continuous or open until filled recruitment. Applications will be reviewed and considered on a rolling basis.


The candidate selected for this position may be hired at the Assistant, Associate, or Senior Planner level, determined by the candidate's background and experience, and at the discretion of the hiring authority. Depending on the level of position placement, the selected candidate will perform increasingly complex duties, as outlined below and detailed in the class specifications. The salary range for each classification levels is as follows: 

  • Assistant Planner: $75,878.40 - $92,248.00
  • Associate Planner: $90,584.00 - $110,094.40
  • Senior Planner: $105,289.60 - $127,982.40

The Position

This position requires a Monday through Friday work schedule and an eight (8) hour work day. On occasion, this position will require irregular work hours when a public service need occurs outside of normal business hours, such as attending community meetings.  Determinations regarding remote work options are at the discretion of management.

  • Assistant Planner: Under general supervision performs research, design and other planning work related to the review and maintenance of the County General Plan; researches and reports on current planning problems; explains and interprets planning ordinances and policies to the public; prepares and reviews environmental assessment documents.

  • Associate Planner: Under general supervision performs professional planning duties; researches and prepares planning studies; explains and interprets planning ordinances and policies to the public; and conducts related work as required. This class differs from the Assistant Planner by the complexity of assignments and independence by which the incumbent is expected to perform.

  • Senior Planner: Under general supervision performs professional planning duties; researches and prepares planning studies; explains and interprets planning ordinances and policies to the public; coordinates and oversees work of other professional planning staff; performs a variety of duties required of special projects; and other related duties as assigned. This class is the specialist/lead level in the Planner series.  It differs from the Associate Planner in that it has lead responsibilities for one or more special project assignments; direct administration, coordination and monitoring responsibilities of a major planning function: Land Use; Housing and Economic Opportunities; Resources and Environmental Management.

Minimum Qualifications

The minimum qualifications required for a candidate to proceed in the selection process are as follows:

License: Positions in this classification require incumbents to possess and maintain a valid California driver’s license, Class C or higher, to carry out job related duties. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to a physical or mental disability may request a reasonable accommodation.

Education: Graduation from a four-year college or university with a degree in planning, engineering, architecture, resource, environmental management, geography, economics, biology, or related field. Verification of education is required. Copies of education transcripts or diploma must be submitted with the online application.

Experience: 
  • Assistant Planner: One (1) year of professional planning experience related to current, advanced and/or environmental planning. 
  • Associate Planner: Three (3) years of professional planning experience.
  • Senior Planner: Five (5) years of increasingly responsible planning experience with a specialization in one of the following areas; land use, housing, economic development, housing rehabilitation, redevelopment, public facilities, infrastructure needs and financing, or resource and environmental management.

For recent graduates who have not received proof of their degree, a letter from the registrar's office stating that all requirements for graduation have been met and listing the field of study will be sufficient proof of graduation. Applicants who possess a degree or completed coursework that is not from an accredited college or university, must submit one of the following:
  1. A written statement from a U.S. accredited university or college that states that the applicant is qualified for entrance to a program of graduate studies for which a degree in a related field is required. 

  2. An evaluation of the applicant's degree and coursework equivalency by a private organization that provides foreign credential evaluation services. The evaluation must include a comparison of comparable U.S. courses for content, credit, and grade.

All foreign transcripts or diplomas must be in English. If the institution does not provide these documents in English, the applicant will need to provide a translation which has been done by a professional agency. The County of Yolo will accept education as equivalent to U.S. accreditation from institutions that are listed as members of the International Association of Universities (IAU). You may check for your school by visiting the IAU web site (https://www.iau-aiu.net/content/institutions). Please Note: Foreign language documents must include a precise word-for-word English translation of all foreign language documents. It is the responsibility of each applicant to prove to the satisfaction of the County that the applicant meets the specific requirements listed on the job announcement for each specific examination.
