About the Department

Examination Schedule:

  • Written Exam: will be conducted on Friday, November 14, 2025

Examinations:
Written Exam (Weight 100%): May include knowledge of basic mathematics; reading meters and gauges; facility safety practices; the use of hand tools and small power tools; facility repairs and maintenance; plumbing methods, equipment and materials; using computers and related software. 

The Human Resources Division may solely conduct an appraisal of application materials should there be an insufficient number of candidates to warrant a written examination.

Applicants must attain at least a 70% score on each phase of the examination process. 

Minimum Qualifications/ Employment Standards:  

High School Diploma, G.E.D. or equivalent.

LICENSE REQUIRED:

Must acquire and maintain a State certification as a Grade I Wastewater Plant Operator, or higher, within two (2) years of appointment or be terminated.

Must possess and maintain a valid California Class "C" driver's license.

SOME POSITIONS MAY REQUIRE:

Possession of a valid California Class "B" driver's license.

Attainment of California Water Environment Association certification in appropriate sewer maintenance, mechanical or electrical categories.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
As a condition of employment, must reside within 45 minutes normal driving time of the Kern Sanitation Authority's wastewater treatment plant located at 4101 Kimber Avenue, Bakersfield, California.

Minimum Qualifications

Admittance to the examination will require a valid government issued photograph identification. Applicants who are unable to present proper identification must make arrangements with the Human Resources Division prior to the test date.

A background check may be conducted for this classification.

Following an offer of employment, you may be required to submit to post offer medical and drug screening tests at County expense.

This examination will establish an eligible list from which an immediate appointment will be made at the Public Works Department.

Other permanent and temporary appointments will be made as needed.  Successful candidates will remain on the eligible list for a period of twelve-months, unless specified otherwise by the Civil Service Commission.
