Position: Sr. Pathology Laboratory Assstant

Job Summary: The Senior Pathology Laboratory Assistant is responsible for preparing the autopsy suite for procedures, assists with the autopsy
procedure to facilitate the performance for the pathologist and residents, coordinates efficient workflow, receives and accessions Pathology samples in electronic health record, delivers and stores samples.

Responsibilities:

Essential Functions
• Directs staff to ensure both corporate and departmental expectations are met in the specimen workflow.
• Demonstrates delegation techniques to assure that the departmental tasks are completed with an efficient and effective use of
resources.
• Acts as a liaison between the laboratory, physicians, nursing personnel, other ancillary departments, clients and vendors outside the
laboratory.
• Effectively enforces policies, rules and regulations.
• Communicates issues and departmental status to immediate supervisor.
• Oversees the registration, receival and accessioning of pathology specimens using the EHR, as needed.
• Ensures follow up on patient care issues.
• Resolves the outstanding and expected list daily to identify missing sample opportunities.
• Coordinates, organizes, and/or performs tasks required to ensure patient care and safety.
• Inventories, files and disposes of pathology specimens.
• Organizes and loads tissue specimens on tissue processors.
• Triages frozen sections in a manner which will expedite their processing.
• Retrieval and filing of paraffin embedded blocks and slides.
• Retrieves tissue specimens, tissue blocks or slides as requested by the pathologists, residents or supervisors for further study.
• Performs and documents solution changes on tissue processors and stainers, maintain all instruments and work areas in a clean
functional condition.
• Demonstrates knowledge of proper specimen collection and handling requirements.
• Trains staff as required.
• Ability to work flexible hours to meet the needs of the department.
• Reports any environmental or mechanical issues to Engineering or Biomed via work order.
• Reports Information Technology issues via a ticket request, in a timely manner.
• Other functions which may be assigned include filing, requisitions, reports, preparation of cytology specimens, retrieval and faxing
reports to doctor offices, locating and preparing blocks and slides for send out to outside organizations for review or additional
procedures.
• Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies, the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state
and local standards.
• Maintains compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures.

 

Other Related Functions
 Responsible for maintaining an active role in the laboratory quality improvement program.
 Practices infection control and safety practices and keeps a clean and organized work area.
 Maintains confidentiality of patient record, hospital and departmental matters at all times.
 Orders and stocks necessary supplies.
 Maximizes productivity, customer satisfaction and profitability.
 Documents specimen quality issues.

Qualifications:

Education/Training
High school graduate or equivalent.

 

Licensure/Certification
None.


Experience
At least three (3) years of experience in the department is required.
