ABOUT THIS JOB

Position Specific Summary

The Civil Engineer position at the City of Tucson’s Planning and Development Services Department performs plan review of private development for compliance with civil engineering standards related to the construction of structures and facilities, the grading of land, and compliance with stormwater regulations.

Work is performed under the supervision of the Neighborhood Resources/Development Services Section Manager.  Position does not supervise.
 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serves as an expert-level engineering reviewer of site plans, grading plans, drainage reports, stormwater pollution prevention plans, geotechnical studies, final plats, assurance agreements, and substitute assurance agreements, ensuring compliance with City, State, and Federal standards and identifying required infrastructure items from tentative plats.

  • Acts as a subject matter expert and provides guidance to ensure compliance through review of work products. Guides and provides direction to Senior Engineering Associates and Engineering Associates.

  • Researches and implements engineering solutions and standards. Evaluates their effectiveness by recommending revisions, researching best practices, and developing new or revised approaches. 

  • Conducts meetings with developers to discuss site demands or challenges. Conducts site visits and discusses construction requirements with contractors. Regularly coordinates with site inspection staff to ensure filed construction aligns with approved plans.

  • Communicates permit and City code policy information through clear and effective communication channels with customers, partners, and stakeholders. Builds and maintains relationships with residents and partners. Delivers public presentations regarding development activities.

  • Performs all other duties and tasks as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: 
Bachelor’s degree.

Experience:
Two (2) years of directly related experience.

Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related engineering discipline and four (4) years of directly related experience.
