CARPENTER I N $19.97 - $24.80


GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Performs building maintenance, repair, and construction work involving masonry, welding,
carpentry, and mechanical work.


EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED
? Performs maintenance, construction, and repair work such as masonry, welding,
carpentry, or mechanical work.
? Performs preventive maintenance on equipment, tools, and buildings.
? Operates and maintains motorized vehicles and equipment.
? May assist with the preventative maintenance and repair of facilities, grounds,
machinery, and equipment.
? Install, maintain, and repair structures and equipment such as doors, door locks,
windows, roofs, walls, floors, benches, desks, chairs, and fences.
? Perform routine and special tile work.
? Renovate rooms and buildings, including walls, counters, landings, rails, steps, etc.
? Respond to special and emergency safety and security needs involving locks, panic
bars, closers, door and window repairs and replacement, etc.
? May assist with plumbing, electrical, or heating, ventilation, and air conditioning work.
? May repair equipment and fabricate parts for repairs.
? May maintain records on work orders or projects.
? May perform inspections of operating machinery, equipment, and utility systems to
ensure efficient and safe operations.
? Performs related work as assigned.


DESCRIPTION OF LEVELS
Note: Examples of work and descriptions are meant to progress through the levels. For
example, an employee at level III may also perform work listed within the previous levels.
Factors that may distinguish between entry and journey levels include the degree of
independence in performing the work, the complexity of the work, the scope of responsibility,
and the employee’s related work experience, education, and certifications. Employees at the
journey level may independently perform the full range of work listed in the examples above or
may routinely assist others in that work. They may also assist others in performing work of
greater complexity.


CARPENTER I: Performs entry-level to moderately complex (journey-level) building
maintenance and construction work. Work involves maintaining and repairing buildings, utility
systems, and stationary equipment; operating motorized equipment; requisitioning material and
supplies; and maintaining records. May provide guidance to others. Works under general
supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
Employees at this level may:
? Coordinates building construction, repair, renovation, or restoration projects.
? Inspects structures, evaluates work to be performed, and determines the best method for
performing maintenance and repair work.


GENERAL QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Experience in construction, maintenance, and repair work. Graduation from a standard senior
high school or equivalent is generally preferred. Experience and education may be substituted
for one another.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
? Knowledge of the construction, repair, maintenance, and operation of buildings,
equipment, and utility systems.
? Skill in the use and maintenance of tools and equipment.
? Ability to follow instructions; to work from drawings, diagrams, or blueprints; and to
communicate effectively.


REGISTRATION, CERTIFICATION, OR LICENSURE
? May require appropriate licensure from the Department of Licensing and Regulation.
? May require appropriate hours of on-the-job training and passing an examination issued
by the Department of Licensing and Regulation.
