Registered Nurse (RN) – Correctional Facility Travel Position

Location: Milan, NM
Job Type: Travel Contract
Duration: 13 weeks
Shift: 3×12 Rotating (Days/Nights) | 36/48 Rotation Possible
Pay: $2,460.60/week (plus $2,500 completion bonus per contract, up to $7,500 after three contracts)

Position Summary

ATC Healthcare is seeking an experienced Registered Nurse (RN) for a 13-week travel assignment at a correctional facility in Milan, New Mexico.

The RN will provide comprehensive nursing care, assist licensed independent providers during examinations, and ensure timely delivery of medications and treatments to the inmate population. This position requires a high level of clinical competency, independent judgment, and the ability to maintain safety and security within a correctional environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver nursing care and treatment to inmates/residents in accordance with facility policies and professional standards.
  • Administer medications, treatments, and immunizations as prescribed; document all care provided.
  • Attend sick call with the physician or licensed independent provider and assist with examinations and treatments.
  • Conduct health assessments and triage inmates/residents with illnesses or injuries, referring them to higher levels of care when necessary.
  • Perform emergency nursing procedures, including basic life support and wound care, as required.
  • Supervise, guide, and evaluate the nursing care provided by LPNs/LVNs and non-licensed healthcare personnel.
  • Monitor and maintain compliance with all pharmacy and medication handling laws, including controlled substances.
  • Ensure medical documentation is accurate, timely, and compliant with HIPAA and facility policies.
  • Collaborate with the Health Services Administrator (HSA) to review medical files, monitor utilization, and ensure completeness of patient records.
  • Provide patient education and health counseling on preventive care, chronic conditions, and medication adherence.
  • Participate in audits, quality assurance reviews, and accreditation processes (NCCHC/ACA/JCAHO).
  • Maintain safety and security standards within the medical unit, identifying and addressing potential contraband risks.
  • Communicate effectively with facility administrators, correctional officers, and outside medical providers.
  • Maintain confidentiality and uphold ethical and professional standards in all interactions.

Qualifications

  • Active New Mexico RN license or Compact State RN license (required).
  • Graduate of an accredited college, university, or nursing program (BSN preferred).
  • Minimum of 1 year of recent professional nursing experience (correctional, emergency, or acute care experience preferred).
  • Required Certifications (AHA):
    • BLS (Basic Life Support).
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and provide proof of U.S. citizenship and Social Security card for facility clearance.
  • Excellent clinical assessment, communication, and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to function independently and effectively in a secure environment.
  • Proof of recent tuberculosis (TB) test required.
