About the Department
Position Duties
- Receives, photographs, tags and appropriately stores decedents along with associated evidence, valuables and personal effects; releases and fingerprints decedents along with associated evidence, valuables and personal effects; enters this data into the computer system
- Receives calls from the public, funeral homes, law enforcement agencies and the news media and routes calls, takes messages and releases appropriate information regarding cases
- Serves as a liaison with San Antonio Eye Bank, and all tissue and organ procurement agencies, coordinating exchange of information regarding cases and escorting personnel as needed
- Serves as a liaison with law enforcement agencies, coordinating exchange of information regarding cases and escorting law enforcement as needed
- Secures and maintains medications and evidence appropriately and may inventory evidence, medications and/or property in a secure environment ensuring the protection and preservation of the chain of custody
- Cleans and maintains autopsy trays, equipment, body coolers, and the morgue work areas
- Assists in maintaining and ordering supplies for assigned section
- Faxes requests to physicians and medical facilities to obtain medical information pertinent to death investigation and distributes medical records
- Initiates death reports and prepare written investigative reports on hospice cases; maintains hospice registration files
- Contacts funeral homes regarding release and pick up of decedents
- Assist in maintaining statistics for investigations and/ or Morgue sections
- May receipt funds from decedents buried under the County’s pauper burial program
- Performs other duties as required
Minimum Qualifications
- Graduation from High School or a General Education Development (GED) certificate, and two (2) years administrative experience in an office, funeral home or criminal justice environment; or equivalent combination of education and experience; medical, criminal justice or mortuary science experience and knowledge of Texas State Medical Examiner Act and related statutes preferred
- Ability to accurately enter data and file information; ability to work independently; ability to organize, compile and record information accurately; ability to operate personal computer and basic office equipment; good knowledge of English spelling, grammar and punctuation; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, County employees and the general public. Ability to work well with other agencies to facilitate effective investigation and appropriate services for decedents and their families
- Must be able to respond to inquiries from public and official agencies with pleasant, effective and professional manner
- Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation from Federal Bureau of Investigation and Bexar County Sheriff’s Office
- Must clear a pre-employment physical and a pre-employment drug screen test
- Must have and maintain a valid Texas driver’s license, motor vehicle liability insurance and personal injury insurance
- May be required to work more than 40 hours during the workweek
- Shift work to provide 24-hour coverage may be required
Working Environment and Physical Demands:
- Working conditions are in an office or morgue environment with potential routine exposure to decedent bodies, hazardous/biohazardous materials, unfavorable fumes, vapors, odors or infectious diseases
- Physical requirements include lifting/carrying of 100-150 lbs. constantly
- Visual acuity, speech and hearing
- Hand and eye coordination
- Manual dexterity necessary to operate computer keyboard
- Subject to handling, walking, sitting, standing, bending, reaching and twisting to perform the essential functions
