Job Description:

Support Staff employees, as defined by the Full-Time Support Staff Collective Agreement, will be given first consideration. 

Payband: This position is paid at Payband J.

Hours: Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Position Summary: Under the general supervision of the Manager, Library Learning Commons User Engagement and in partnership with relevant academic areas and College shareholders, the incumbent provides technical support and assistance to staff, faculty and students and coordination of daily operations, maintenance, and organization of Makerspace equipment and programs in the Library Learning Commons.  

Duties and Responsibilities:

Makerspace User Support and Coordination

  • Oversees Makerspace during drop-in hours or by appointment

  • Coordinates the booking of internal and external groups

  • Supports users with academic/curricular or independent/recreational projects by:

    • Recommending tools, equipment or techniques to achieve desired goals

    • Identifying, building/maintaining, and providing makerspace supply kits

    • Demonstrating the use of tools, equipment or techniques

    • Monitoring users to ensure they adhere to safety requirements

  • Promotes the Makerspace’s ability to support students with curricular and personal projects

  • Plans and implements creative, engaging programming for students and staff

Technical Coordination

  • Provides technical support to the Makerspace that includes:

    • Service and repair all tools and equipment (install, clean, adjust, dismantle, recondition, repair/rebuild/replace parts, assemble and test as required)

    • Record maintenance and repair activities for lab tools and equipment

    • Requisition supplies for department use and maintenance as required

    • Tool control

  • Develop instructional aides to demonstrate techniques and prepare materials for related classes and workshops

  • Prepare and maintain a suitable preventative maintenance program for related department equipment

  • Maintain Safety Data Sheets for the Makerspace area

Team Coordination

  • Assists with the selection of student staff.

  • Guides, advises and provides training to part-time and student staff working in the Makerspace

  • Coordinates the delegation of tasks and coverage within the Makerspace

  • Acts as a key resource person in the Makerspace and assists peers with resolving escalated issues or challenges

  • Demonstrate tools, equipment or techniques to other staff to ensure the use of specific tools and lab equipment conforms to College safe operating procedures, manufacturer specifications or specific conditions that may be unique to the individual piece of equipment

Qualifications:  

  • Post-secondary 3-year diploma in Trades-related discipline, Electrical/Electronics, Engineering, Construction, CNC Programmer, or related field of study

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience with design, development, installation, commissioning, operation and maintenance of post-secondary lab equipment

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered 

  • Experience working in a Makerspace is an asset

  • Experience mentoring students (e.g. co-op students) is an asset

  • Experience in a student service or customer service role is an asset

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills

  • Critical thinking, creativity and problem-solving skills

  • Proficient organizational skills and attention to detail
