Summary:
The High School Security Officer plays a vital role in ensuring the safety, security, and well-being of all students, staff, and visitors on campus. This individual is responsible for maintaining a safe school environment by monitoring activity on and around school property, addressing safety and behavioral incidents, supporting arrival and dismissal procedures, and building positive, professional relationships with students to promote a secure and supportive school climate.
Key Responsibilities
Campus Supervision & Safety Monitoring
- Patrol interior and exterior areas of the school campus to prevent and respond to safety concerns, including hallways, stairwells, bathrooms, entrances, and exits.
- Monitor multiple building entry and exit points, ensuring only authorized individuals enter the premises.
- Prevent unauthorized access to the campus and address incidents of students leaving the building without permission.
- Supervise student movement during transitions, arrival, lunch periods, and dismissal to ensure safety and order.
- Respond promptly to disturbances, emergencies, fights, and behavioral incidents following school protocols.
- Support emergency drills and actively participate in building safety procedures, including fire, lockdown, and evacuation protocols.
Student Support & Culture Building
- Build strong, positive relationships with students to proactively de-escalate potential conflicts and reinforce school expectations.
- Model and reinforce school culture and behavioral norms through consistent, respectful interactions with students.
- Serve as a visible and approachable presence throughout the school day, supporting a safe and welcoming environment.
- Collaborate with the Dean of Culture and administrative team to implement restorative practices and positive behavior supports.
Incident Response & Documentation
- Intervene and support staff during behavioral incidents, including physical altercations, trespassing, or safety threats.
- Follow up with dean of culture to document incidents clearly and thoroughly.
- Support investigations by providing witness statements, video footage, or other relevant information.
Additional Responsibilities
- Monitor and manage visitor sign-in and sign-out procedures, ensuring compliance with safety policies.
- Support after-school events, programs, and assemblies as assigned.
- Communicate safety-related concerns promptly to administration and collaborate to resolve ongoing issues.
- Assist with supervision during special events as needed.
Qualifications
Qualifications
- Prior experience in school security, law enforcement, or youth-facing roles preferred.
- Ability to remain calm and professional in high-pressure situations.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build trust with adolescents.
- Knowledge of de-escalation techniques, restorative practices, and conflict resolution strategies.
- Ability to walk, stand, and patrol for extended periods and respond quickly to emergencies.
